If it is under the water-line then pouring vinegar into the water may help.
I tried but to no avail.

I will use the acid then maintain with vinegar I guess so it won't come back.

The various acids mentioned above aren't good for the infernal mixture, either, except for white vinegar, but then you're in the UK and aren't likely to have a septic tank!
Didn't know there are no septic tanks in the UK! thanks!

There are plenty of them in the countryside in the UK as it's not practical to run mains drainage that far out of towns and villages. Plenty of farms have their own spring water as well..

If finding a strong acid is difficult I'd put a cup of vinegar in the toilet either every night before bed, or before leaving for work, every day for a month, before concluding it doesn't work.

I didn't realise there were so many in the countryside, but as bp doesn't live in rural UK (at least I don't think she does!), her loo isn't concerned by my Eau de Javel warning!

Our plombier says a little bit now and then does little harm. Just don't use bucket loads.
We generally do use the loo cleaners without bleach, but they don't seem to clean very well.

What are the effective alternatives for cleaning toilets that go to a septic tank please?

Personally I use "détartrant surpuissant" gel or poudre by Starwax, but any commercial détartrant can be used, provided it says "compatible fosse septique" on the label.

Sorry, can't remember the name, but when we had a septic tank here we used one of the many products sold in LeClerc. We were told that they more or less all had the same effect. Carrefour etc also stock the same.
