The cooling of the formerly friendly attitudes has, I believe, very little to do with British ski bums - it's a consequence of the volume and flavour of the "enrichment" they've experienced over the last decade or so.

"They would be out overnight" doesn't mean rounded up and deported but without FoM = work, insurance...

I didn't say that the cooling of the friendly attitude had anything to do with Brits as I'm not a Brit. I experience the cooler attitude as I have to deal with the officialdom on behalf of a non-German speaker but EU citizen.

I will say this - your average Austrian knows a lot more about Britain than the average Brit knows about Austria !

I think that goes for most of Europe!

You can buy Tshirts in Salzburg with print "there are no kangaroos in Austria".
Even some French get it wrong. My neighbor asks me every year whether we go to Australia again.

A kangaroo is on the loose and has been spotted in forests and meadows in Austria, police said Monday.

I didn't say they will be rounded up and deported. They just loose all their rights overnight. Once their application for R-W-R card has been approved you can continue. There are income requirements. I don't know how much a barman or skiing instructor earns. Austria is no longer the welcoming country it once was. I often get the impression they (officialdom) would rather see the back of foreigners.

Austria is an interesting country at any stage, however I have the same impression that foreigners are no longer really welcome in Austria. Internationals from western Europe often, Brits, French, etc.. tend to stay among themselves in international groups and often being posted for work at one of the international UN-organisations. Brits in Austria are mostly known for their excessive drinking as tourists in ski resorts like Mayrhofen. Austrians also tend to be unfriendly to foreigners, excet tourists and foreign students.

Especially if one is from the Balkans or Turkey they are clearly to mostly unwanted and often unaccepted in the Austrian society. It's also the main reason, why dual citizenship will always be an issue and a contentious subject in Austria. They simply don't want somebody holding both Turkish and Austrian citizenship, the same goes for somebody who is from somewhere from the Balkans and wants to be Austrian as well.

Any kind of "Hard Brexit" would be an immediate loss of rights, and the R-W-R card just doesn't offer the same rights and certainty, other than it's more uncertain......

Austrians remind me of Thais: they says yes and don't mean "yes", they are friendly the moment they see money coming in. No matter where you are from, or who the foreigner is, tourist or student, they just pretend to be friendly. Drunk tourists come from many countries. This habit is not a characteristic of the ones you mentioned. Add Scandinavians. There is hardly a weekend where there isn't a punch up in one of the bars in Salzburg, summer or winter. 2015/2016 migration wave has added to anti immigrant attitude. Austrians blame Merkel but on the ground the Germans get to feel the dislike because "their Merkel" let the masses in. Germans are historically unpopular.
The previous govt. and the incoming govt., both headed by Kurz, netted support with anti-immigration policy.

Austria always had this citizenship issue not just because of Turks and Balkan immigrants.

Austria has come up with an R-W-R+ card for Brits if there is a hard Brexit. Plus is no language requirement !! Can't see other benefits compared to ordinary RWR card.

Yes, I've also heard the story about Scandinavians involved in brawls in bars around Austria. It's not only Brits.

This Kurz character with an anti-immigration policy seems to have taken voters from the far right freedom party, Anti-immigration in Austria seems more like "anti-refugee" to me, but I could be wrong here...

Isn't the R-W-R Plus card temporary as well? Or is the status permanent in nature and only needs renewal to have an up to date picture?

I wonder if the post by TheAwesomeMatt is a joke or a sign that he thinks Austria and Australia are the same place. I know that some "expats" are geographically challenged.

That's a bit mean scot. Matt probably just had a quick read of the word Austria and thought it said Australia. I read words incorrectly sometimes, I think we all do. Nothing to do with being 'challenged', just a simple mistake.

It was obviously a joke, but it's nice that you have such high opinion of expats.
