We are looking to come to oz to live and work. My hubby is a Shift Maintenance Electrical Technician and we have struggled to find what he would come under under the skilled migrant category. I have now been told he would come under Electrican trade person. I have also recently been told that TRA no longer assess General Electricians for the trade certification and we have to go through VETASSESS. What a nightmare! Can anyone help us to get started on this mission. Any help at all would be appreciated.

there are loads on here who will help you, and i am just finishing all the paperwork for the OH assessment, so give me a shout if you need help with anything.
first thing would be is to get 4 copies of passport bio page, certificates, any licences, membership of anything to do with his job, insurances, references (will help you with the layout of that if you want), and get 2 copies of each certified.
that should keep you busy for a few days.
Wendy and Steve'o are the best people to ask, as for the actual assessment there is a green sticky at the top of this forum. that tells you whats in the tests.
good luck

hi there, first thing we did was to log onto the vetassess web site and download the application form...as sheff sparky says you'll need a hell of a lot of paperwork so start sooner rather than later!
the forms are all self explanatory but any help you need is all on this fab forum
good luck with it all, shout if you need help, lou x

passport bio pages is the page with his photo on.
All certificate to do with his job, ones he got through colllege, on site, health and safety, NICEIC (if he has it)etc . everything to do with work, photocopy it 4 times.
certification:
after making 4 copies of everything you need to certify 2 copies of each.
this is done by sending them to:
(let me find my bit a paper)
police officer
solicitor
chartered accountant
Doctor
Judge
Justice of the peace
Public Notary
the words "certified true copy of the original"
original signature of certifying officer
name and address and registration number(if applicable)
references by his employer and previous employers (over the past 7 years)
if he was self employed at anytimes he will need to do a statuary delclaration detaling (and i mean DETAIL) his job, how he does it, what he wroks from, with, method he uses, materials, tools, refernces to guidelines and regs. EVERYTHING. copies of tax return forms will be needed if he was self employed too.

Thanks again for your valued info. My OH is not an electrician as in domestic he is a plant maintenance Electrical Technician working on robots, plc ect on fast moving consumer goods machinery so does not have any licences other than his qualifications and 16th edition and do we need to include further training done through work to do with his industry. So just to recap I need to photocopy 4 passport, 4 copies of all certificates gained at college and through work and to get 2 sets (complete) certified ?
Thanks

Dont forget to base your evidence on the specific competence clusters, even if he's only done the task once make sure he documents it....

Hi Guys and welcome to the minefield.
Reading OP's notes does anyone else think they should apply for ;
Electrician Special Class - dealing with robots, plc ie intricate parts - if so then TRA is assessing body.
Anyone any thoughts.
Wendy and Steve'o are the experts they maybe on later

I second and third all that everyone else says, my suggestion as someone else has mentioned would be to have a look at the application on the Vetassess website and see if he can associate his experience with the requirements, that will tell you whether to go through as general electrician or o try TRA for special class electrician.
Good luck, it's a hard slog!!

I would get an assessment from a migration agent (or two) to be honest, see whay they say would be the best route. It's a lot of money to spend on the Vetassess application for them to turn around at one point and turn you down. Most do a free initial consultation, so you may as well take advantage of it.
If I had more confidence in the Vetassess route then I would suggest that with it issuing a provisional licence but after talking to someone here in SA that is currently doing the wiring rules course, it seems that nobody here even knows about Vetassess and there doesn't seem to be any provisions in place for anyone coming out here with a 'provisional licence' from them as yet
so God knows what is going to happen next?

He has done both domestic and manufacturing - we went as general electrician. When we started the process Electrician was only on the skills list for South Australia so we were looking at sponsorship from them. It wasn't until after the TRA assessment that it was put on the national shortage list. We still opted for SA, which is where we are. The licence was pretty easy to get here compared to the other states, took my OH 5 months but he didn't book himself on the course until 3 months after we got here
. He was working within a day of getting it though
