guys are there any tools you think I should bring out with me when I come over which you think would be cheaper here.

Dont want to get there and think shit I could of got one in England for half the price, and better to get it now whilst I have the money

As I may (hopefully) be in a similar position at some point I will be keeping a keen eye on this thread

I have heaps of tools here, is it better to sell them and buy whats required when I relocate or ship them (I already own a shipping container which could be shipped over with all my belongings/tools) as they should work fine over there (same voltage etc)

Thoughts?

new pyro tools had a couple of sets and bought new ones as back ups
( never used once )

pipe vice - mine is in the shed along with all the thread making tools slowly rusting away, aussies use predominatly pvc conduit and dont seem to know what a set is as even the pvc changes to flexable on corners beams etc



things that have been useful
fish rods - wish i`d brought another set most buildings are timber framed with studs on the inside and brick veneer so very useful to have the old rods in the van,

flexable cable ringing tool - aussies use masses of flexable cables orange circular gets used lot for submans etc

do you mean the type that we use over here on yy and sy cable, I think I have a couple of these already may need some spare blades.

I'll leave the pipevice then and flog it.

How about power tools, as 240v are cheaper here than 110v so didnt' know if I should get some now from Screwfix.

who are you using for shipping, and If you dont mind me asking what are they charging as this is something we need to source.

Whilst I would love to be at the stage of getting shipping quotes it is a long way off for me unfortunately as I have just began the whole Visa process

One of my customers ships containers from the uk over to the Australian mines so I will quiz him at the start of the week regarding costs but another customer recently shipped a container from Australia to the UK at a cost of £2000

i havnt bought many tools out here to be honest ( still using the 18v dewalt from the uk and my trusty 24v persussion drill albeit with new batteries ) so dont know how they would compare
110v some seem to be able to get it onto site others its a no no ( depends on how keen/switched on the site agent/foreman is
i know that legally you carnt test n tag a 110v tranny as it wont trip a rcd if a fault occurs on the secondry side and all sites infact all installations out here relay heaverly on the old rccd,
they worship the rccd or "safty switch" as its called like a god,
its wonderful but most dont seem to understand how they even work
but thats another story
and yes lots of people have test tags on there tools but its a mate with a roll of tags and not "real", so its up to the individual to make the decision do i use or not?

knees gets better but the old shoulder is giving me nightmares still
when they operated on the collar bone they found that the tendon to my bicep was badly damaged too so the cut it out and re-attachted it to the top of my arm ( painful and carnt put any weight on it yet for fear of tearing it off )

Hi we shipped a part load groupage service with Pickfords last yr.
We had quotes from Anglo pacific and Pickos as we only bought some of our stuff no big furniture. The both estimated around 400 cu ft we managed to knock Pickos down from £2400 to £2000. Mind you they all stick it to you with the shipping insurance ours was £620.
On the day of shipping the packers told us we were way under and now we wish we had bought more household things instead of selling for next to nothing at boot sales. Silly things like we got £1 for a good iron at a boot sale then had to spend $15-20 on a cheap one here.
Like most things in life practice makes perfect but when it comes to moving to Oz you only do it once.
Tools on the other hand i bought the lot sparking tools general building tools even some of my late fathers cabinate making stuff. It was only the garden stuff that didn't come.

Ahh work here $64000 question. Im strugleing to get a start right now but im still waiting for my licence to come from Adelaide. Hays agency say they can get me a start but i think they really want to see me with a licence in my wallett.
I have applied for quite a few jobs and there is work out there i think getting that 1st start is the hard bit. I have even just started applying for non trade jobs now.

When i got my visa in 2008 i had a year to activate it, so 10 months latter we still hadn't sold our house i had to come for a short trip. Just to get my passport scanned by immigration. While i was here i rang about 20 contractors to get a feel for the job market. The response was mixed but the concencious was that there would be little chance of getting a job to quick.
So i returned to blighty and lowered the house price, on the face of it this is a costly move and you loose a lot. But you only live once and i know that in the end i will get a good job and there is so much to gain here.

I have a sister in-law at Coomera waters (very upmarket) it is very nice. Upper Coomera in the inland side of the highway and i have never been there.
You do have to bear in mind that traffic heading into Brisbane can be heavy but heading around the Gold coast easyer going. But there is more work Brisbane way.

If i was doing it all again i would be doing the corresponance course of PEER from the UK. Then book the exam for when you get to oz.

thanks for the reply, no it must be another 'CHRIS'. I think I will be doing the PEER route from the U.K just to try and speed things up.

We have spoken to other people who have mentioned the traffic going to Brisbane but you have to go where the work is dont you.

I would definitely take a good set of voltage testers. I could never find any when I was in Sydney. I asked in one the wholesalers if they had a set of test lamps and the guy dug out...a lamp with 2 leads attached to it.

All the sparks there used volt sticks, which I can't stand and definitely don't trust. Is that what they use elsewhere in Aus?
