Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Hi,
My name is Dougie and my wife is .....yep louise :p We have decided to take the plunge and move down under  So at this point i would like to say cheers to all on here and the virtual drinks are on me http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...07/13_4_91.gif Ok now the serious stuff:mad: I am currently a supervisor on a petro-chemical site but have very good experience with industrial / commercial / domestic fields. I need to get myself sorted and start the process of immigration but after looking through loads and loads of threads on here and a couple of other sites i am still very very confused :o. I understand that i need to apply for several different licences etc etc but i get lost in all the abbrevations that everyone is using for all different types of grades / exams / etc etc I would be very gratefull if someone could reply to this who has had first hand experience on the above and can explain in lamens terms what my options are as far as getting a full license in QLD It would also be a big big help if they were listed in prioty and no abbrevations were used (or at least the explantion along with it !) i,m sorry if this sounds bossy / condersending but i like many of you on here am very eager to get this underway as soon as, and do not mean to come across that way. Also i apolgise if this has been done before but i cannot find the thread that explains the whole process so feel free to point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance Dougie:thumbup: |

Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Hi Dougie,
If you are applying as an Electrician, you will need to apply through Vetassess for the initial immigration process. This involves a paper assessment and a practical assessment. Testing periods are roughly every quarter and you have up until a certain date (about a month or a little more before the practicals start date) to submit the paper application. Once positive, you then proceed to the practical. There is a lot of info on here at the moment about this as the July practicals have just got underway, so there is some feed back on these. Once you have received the positive assessment through Vetassess (http://www.vetassess.com.au/index.cfm?menu=1.3a) you can then apply for your visa. The vetassess website has lots of info on the in's and out's of this process. There are of course the usual medicals and police checks that you need to have done for your visa, which can be front loaded or done when you are asked to do so. Once you get over to Oz, there is yet more paper work to fill in as you will need to get a licence and go to college etc etc. :D What you get from Vetassess is an OTSR (Offshore Technical Skills Record). Which is I think supposed to be the equivalent to the Australian Qualification (certificate) III. You can then apply for a B licence which will enable you to work supervised and attend college to get your A license. As for the licensing in QLD, try the following website: www.deir.qld.gov.au. Info on licensing is available from the Vetassess website. http://www.vetassess.com.au/download...Electrical.pdf I hope this is of some help to you. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try to help. |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Hi Dougie,
You seem to have plenty of experience in different electrical backgrounds and it might be worth you taking a look at applying for "Electrician -Special Class". I applied back in January for this type because I'm from a maintenance background and it made the process of getting your skills accessed alot easier. In my case it only took 3 weeks from sending the application form off to getting the green light to apply for my visa. If you go via this route you will need to apply to "TRA" to get your skills assessed. The cost for this assessment was $300 in Jan + the courier charge when you send the forms back to Canberra. (TRA = Trades recognition Australia) Take a look at the link below, I got most of my info from this site & Expats. http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplac...oAustralia.htm As far as the Licences when you get over to Qld - I wouldn't start thinking of that until you have had your skills assessed and your visa has been put in. Anyway Good luck with your application.  |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Hello All,
Think long and hard before going down the "Special Class", most people on here are looking to do either "maintenance(fitters) or Industry / commercial / domestic(mechanics). Which i believe is "general electrician" on the immigration list. If you look at any of these, you need to do Vessetess theory and practical, a word of warning, most companies will not touch you unless you have a "electrical mechanics and the one's that will want a Electrical Fitters license, the rest are restricted licences linked to the trade for which they are issued (not electricians) I live in Brisbane and i hear this all the time, companies are out there that hired sparkys as trade assistants but the money isn't as good and you don't get the licence. Hope this helps, i'm not trying to put anyone off going down the route they have choosen, but some people have struggled and lot's of research is needed Regards Kevin |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Kevin
If you apply for the "Special Class" route does that mean that you can't apply to the "ARTC" as either a "Electrical Fitter or mechanic"?? The way I had been thinking was as follows: Apply to TRA as Electrician Special Class. Apply for Visa Apply to ARTC for either a Fitter or Mechanic Grade Go down to Peer and complete the Wiring course Apply in Adelaide for License. Transfer to Qld. Is this correct or have a picked it up wrong??? If I've picked the information up wrong I apologise for mis-leading you Dougie. |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Hi Glapper,
I think the classification you get initially is for immigration purposes only(ie Special Class or General Electrician). Whichever path gets you out there. Once you get to Oz you can then do anything you like provided you are trained and have whatever license is needed. The ARTC will do an assessment of your skills similarly to a college practical and exam etc. and then based on that you will be granted a licence or not as they see fit. I think an element of college is needed too for all english sparks anyway. That's my understanding. :) |

Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Thanks for all the replies guys,
:confused::confused: I am really only after the route in which to go down which will have me working at the highest grade possiable in QLD upon arrival in OZ I,m guessing the general agreement is 1.Apply to TRA 2.get accepted by TRA 3.Apply for Visa 4.Get meds & cop report 5.get accepted for visa 6.move to OZ 7.Do wiring course (16/17th edition OZ style) 8.Work as a supervised spark (what type of money is this per hour ish compared??) 9.apply for ARTC to gain full un-supervised sparky and special class / petro-chemical COMPEX type thing OZ style 10.not have to worry about any more paper work and enjoy the new life:thumbup: Please feel free anyone to fill in the blanks where i may be able to do things quicker or what distance courses have you/friend done that are applicable to me that may reduce the time spent on the lower wage in OZ Does this make sense ?? Hope you guys can help and look forward to hearing your replies Regards Dougie edited Ps with a TRA application do you have to do any theroy / practicals in england?? only reading post about people applying through vittesse and they have to book on and pass exam before they can apply for visa?? Whats the difference in application i take it there must be otherwise everyone would be down the TRA route yeah?? thanks again folks |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
not sure if i would call it the highest grade but electrical mechanic is the endorsement with no restrictions. points 1 to 6 as you have posted are correct. you dont have to be in oz to start the process of getting a license though.
this is how am doing it. 1) applied to TRA for skills assessment (vetassess for general electrician eg installation / domestic etc) 2) apply for visa 3) meds and police checks 4) visa granted 5) apply for ARTC from uk using a friend in Oz for address (this is NOT any type of license, it is a certificate saying you have a trade equivalent to an australian one ie electrical mechanic or electrical fitter) 6) you must have an ARTC certificate to apply for a license. you can either do the license in the state you will be working/living or do it in another state (as i am doing) where the licensing system is quicker and easier. you can then transfer the license to another state. 7) you can now work as a licensed electrician. |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Thanks Lee,
RE: 1) applied to TRA for skills assessment (vetassess for general electrician eg installation / domestic etc) what do you get from the TRA that you dont get from vetassess? is it one or the other or do you need both? If you only need one is the TRA the one for me with the skills and experience i have? I,m really sorry for pestering but I WILL get to the bottom of this today  and really appreciate all the help i,m getting here but the more i read into the various posts and the more conflicting views i here makes me wanna stay in england:thumbdown: http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...7/4_1_2191.gif YEAH RIGHT no but serious please help thaks Dougie |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
Hi Dougie,
Take a look at this link for Electrician Special Class: http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupati...s)-4311-13.htm and the following for General Electrician http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/occupati...al-4311-11.htm This is the different between the two. You only need either TRA or either Vetassess and depends on which route you decide to take. Vetassess for the General Electrician and TRA for the Special Class Electrician. I think the links above give you assessment boby details. Hope this assists. |
Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
thats right. they are two different trades. have a read through and see which one best describes your job. mine was electrician special class as i repair machines, fault find on process lines etc. if you mainly do installation, rewires etc (sorry to generalise!) then general electrician is for you. once you know which type of electrician you are its easy. to apply a visa you must first have your skills assessed. general electricians are assessed by vetassess, electrician special class by TRA. this isnt any form of qualification. just part of the visa process.

Re: Sparky application question Again !!!!!!
THANKS for the input i really feel that i am getting somewhere now :D
Would i be right in thinking that if i applied down the TRA route for a 'special class' was approved then of course this gives me the right to apply for the Visa. OK great. If i fail on my application i have lost $300 ish and must go down the vetassess route with all the practicals and theory and more expense etc etc  If i pass and get to OZ on that visa then i of course still have to do the Peer exams in the south (for speed reasons) then do a practical ARTC exam and based on this they will give me a license based on what they see me as competent for, (ie) Electrical mechanic licence Electrical linesperson licence Electrical fitter licence Electrical jointer licence Restricted electrical work licence Electrical work training permit then off to work once i have swapped the license to QLD or do i ?? (post 8 here http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...71#post6539171 ) If the above is correct then for 'speed reasons' i may aswell take my chances down the specials road as i have good experience with : motors, soft star units for motors, control circuits & fault finding on them , pneunatics , trace heating (dont think they'll have that in OZ much :p) stripping down of engines and motors , saab and motherwell tank guage systems , hazadous area classified equipment,LV, SELV, fire alarm systems, inspection and testing and few other bits and bobs... however i have no formal qualifacations for the above :frown: What type of certs / references etc did you guys produce to the TRA to get accepted that way? Not long now i can see the light at the end of this tunnel  Thanks in advance again guys Regards Dougie |
