With the UK looking increasingly likely now to actually & stupidly persist with leaving the EU, does anybody know if a 1960s birth in our SBA at Akrotiri might qualify that individual for any kind of avenue leading to Cypriot (& hence EU) citizenship? With advance thanks for helpful replies, and hello to all from here in western Canada.

UK Forces have always had their own independent registration system for births and hence the person in question will most likely be a UK Citizen.
I say most likely because another member asked a similar question recently and although the birth was registered by Army authorities abroad, they had problems
obtaining UK citizenship at a later stage.

Akrotiri is UK sovereign territory. Birth there is not the same as birth in The Republic of Cyprus.

In 1960 the War Office still had imperial delusions !

But it may be that the OP's question does not relate to someone employed as a soldier. As I understand the situation, any civilian born on the bases would today be a "citizen" of a British Overseas Territory - with the right to apply for UK citizenship. It may or may not be an automatic right.

Reading the post I think the chap is more interested in the EU rather than the UK.

Here's a relevant question... When Britain formally leaves the EU (on whatever date is agreed by all), how long will Brits' EU passports be valid? They wouldn't become invalid suddenly, I should think - more likely, a validity date would have to be agreed for that, too. But does anyone here have an opinion on how long the period might be? Has anything been published about that?

By “EU passport”, do you mean British passports with the words “European Union” on the front? They’ll remain valid until they expire, same as always.

Yes, I did mean that. Thanks for the info that it will be valid until it expires. Mine has a couple of years left on it, I think.
