UKM - Missing mum's expired passport. What to do?
Hey there lovely Expats. I'm Canadian born to a Scottish mother, and in the midst of completing my UKM application.
I have all the paperwork ready to go except my mother's expired passport. My mum passed away, but I know she collected her UK pension till the end, so she is certainly in the UK system.
I'm at a bit of a standstill. I was told I could fill out a subject access request to get a record of her passport, except that I need her permission to do that which rather tough from beyond the grave. So now I'm wondering if I need a form to allow me to fill out the form to get the record of the passport? I feel like I'm in bureaucratic inception...!
Has anyone had this issue - missing their mother's expired passport - when completing a UKM? If so, how did you get around it, or did you?
Thanks!

Just go with what you've got. Providing your mother was born in the UK and you have her full birth certificate then you shouldn't have a problem. Enclose her death certificate as well and a note explaining you don't possess her old passport. If you have a Canadian passport for her then enclose that as well. If you do want to go down the SAR route then you can request it yourself providing you provide your birth certificate showing her name and her death certificate so that it's clear that she is deceased and you are the next of kin.

Just a quick FYI that I did EXACTLY what you wrote, and my papers came through today. I'm official. Thanks again. Your response was exactly what I needed to hear last summer, and thanks to you, this woman is on her way
