Default Question: UK citizen working in Italy, Romanian wife -- UK residence card?

HI everyone!

Hopefully someone kind might be able to help me figure out how to me understand how to solve my visa question.
I'm working (for 9 months) in Italy for an Italian company (and am I UK citizen, although have been abroad for 2 years)
My wife is Romanian and lives with me in Italy.
At the end of my 9 month contract in Italy (December 2019) we want to return home to the UK.

How can I get my wife registered so you can come back with me to the UK? Is it possible to register her prior to Brexit? Will she be eligible to live in the UK with me after Brexit? Will we have to go through the ridiculously expensive spouse visa process like husbands do if they are married to current non-EEA nationals do now?

Does anyone have a suggestion on how we might solve this problem? Thanks so much -- there's so little guidance and it's so unclear what will happen in our case it is very frustrating!

Thanks everyone for any help or suggestions!

I don't know much about EU citizens' rights after Brexit, but I just saw on the news that May will offer another parliamentary vote with all options if she can't get the deal sorted by next week. Since you have some time, what about waiting a little and see what happens.

Plenty of information available if you know where to look. I recommend the recent white paper on post-Brexit immigration policy. The status quo for EEA citizens arriving in the UK will continue after 29 March until December 2020, even in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit so your wife can move with you this December. If there is a deal then she can register and after five years become eligible for ILR. If there’s no deal she can apply for a three year temporary Leave to Remain after which she will be subject to the future skills-based immigration system. At this point you may need to sponsor her for a spouse visa if she does not meet those requirements.
