Ielts a1 exemption
Hi guys,
i have a quick question about ielts a1 exemption rules. A good friend of mine has been trying for almost 5 years to get her husband over to the U.K from Pakistan but because he keeps failing his ielts test it’s all been going to vein. However recently his English teacher suggested getting a medical proof from the doctor stating he isn’t confident in speaking in front of other people, thus it is impossible for him to pass the test. I’m guessing they’re trying to claim he has test anxiety or something along them lines. Would you say this is a valid reason for him to be exempt from the ielts a1 test?

Your friend’s husband would need to be suffering from a long term mental or physical illness which prevents him from learning English in order to receive an exemption. Simply being nervous about taking an exam or having confidence issues is unlikely to satisfy this requirement.

It's not possible to get an exemption prior to applying. He would need to submit an exemption form, completed by a qualified medical professional, with his application. The ECO would consider this form along with all the other required evidence for a spouse visa before making a decision.

IELTS Life Skills is just to test his understanding of basic English and his communication. If he's able to communicate day to day in his daily life with friends, colleagues and strangers he meets then he should be able to endure the 30mims or less the test usually last. And it's just 3 ppl in the room. The examiner and 2 candidates. It's basically the two candidates conversing and answering questions after listening to a short tape. Except there is a known and documented case like BiP said, it will be very hard to convince anyone that the anxiety is so severe as to affect the test.
