Default Five Weeks in Vancouver

Lot of 'lurking' once I found this forum looking for advice and reassurance on somethings.

We applied under the FSW program in 2005/6, came through in 2010 and we landed June 2010, moved here finally last month. Looks like we got in just before the FSW became more restrictive but we're in.

Impossible to find a job from outside Canada so we have just come. Looking good so far.

Love Vancouver, just like we knew we would. Have had quite a bit of rain but some amazing sunny days.

Highlights - getting the seabus across from the North shore and seeing Vancouver coming closer, views of the mountains, a small big city (we came from London) and a really good vibe. Kits beach, Stanley Park I could go on..

Challenges.

Having no credit record is an issue. Had to lodge a deposit with the bank (TD) before they would give me a 'credit' card so I could build up a credit history.

Having no credit it took ages to get a mobile account with Rogers. Had to get a PAYG first as having no phone was difficult.

Very branch based banking, which having used First Direct in the UK for 20 years is a new experience - luckily the hours are good.

In fact bought a car with a car loan (through Scotia) before I could get a mobile phone.

Food and booze seem very expensive compared to UK with a lot cards required to get discounts.

Stupid mistake - giving all my multiplug UK extensions away without thinking about plugging them into the UK/Canada adaptor.

Anyway great place loving it, everyday is an adventure as we build our new life...

You will be surprised at how much easier the credit thing is after a year. It feels back to normal for us now. In the meantime enjoy , I hope to come and see Vancouver soon

Be careful. It'll be like owning ford fiesta and deciding the test drive a Bentley.

To the OP, welcome. I see you live in the rainy part of the area although it certainly is a beautiful day today

Hello,

We had the same credit issues, we have been in Vancouver for nearly a month now. Managed to get credit with koodo for mobile phones and vancity gave us a credit card - no security deposit required (HSBC wanted $1000!). Small $500 limit but at least a way of building up a credit record here.

That may well be, but if you are refering to Nova Scotia as a Ford Fiesta then you are mistaken. Halifax is a beautiful place and this province ticks all our boxes, therefore we are in our version of a Bentley
