Thats why people are seeing what you are doing as potentially sponging off those of us who will be paying 30 or 40 years of our working lives into the system before we are in that unfortunate position. You seem intelligent, Im surprised I need to spell this out to you. The assumption is that if you are going to work in the US that you will declare yourself non resident in Canada for tax purposes. Do you intend to keep filling and paying Canadian taxes in your absence before you retire back in Canada? |

Either retirees are entitled to it, or they are not. High earners in the society pay in more and subsidise lower earners, but everyone is part of society, contributing what they are deemed able to afford. Personally I make a distinction between that situation, and a situation where someone is a high earner elsewhere, but chooses not to contribute to this particular society, at least not until that are in a position where they want to enjoy the benefits of it anyway. Specific risk takers could be an area where public policy will change over time, who knows? Right now I would say that Smokers pay plenty in tax/ duty on their habit, and have the great benefit of expiring of cancer and heart disease before they become costly long term dementia sufferers at least.... |

Dont be in denial, old people end up in hospital, and its expensive to either have to pay for your own insurance or pay out of pocket. After a working life in the US why would you want to leave 20 or 30 years worth of friends, relatives, contacts, basically your entire social support network behind and move back to Canada? It makes no more sense than my Father deciding to move to Cornwall or somewhere else he doesnt know anyone, let alone changing countries:confused: |
