Unfortunately most people don't seem to understand the HST. Most are going to be better off under HST without doing a thing. Many prices will stabilise over the next few years to a lower level than they would have been under the PST. In BC a majority of those who signed the petition against the HST are the ones who gain from its implementation.

We used to pay a lot of hidden tax in manufactured products due to the cascading effect of PST.

If you want to work and live in the US but you are not equipped enough to qualify, then you immigrated to the wrong country. You should have immigrated to Mexico or a central American country and then hired someone to smuggle you in. Funny thing is though, any letter written to an MP urging them to "hurry up" is likely outnumbered by the letters from citizens asking the MP to "slow it down".

I quite agree with this comment. One of the things that drives me crazy about Canadians is they just seem to accept things and get on with it. Maybe if more people complained we'd all get more than 3 crappy weeks holiday a year and we might not have been shafted with the HST. Change mostly comes about when resistance is applied. This is true in science and politics. As a permanent resident making a positive contribution to the country, and actively seeking citizenship, I believe you absolutely have a right to complain to your MP.

We don't opt out of paying taxes, so why should we sit back in silence and just be thankful we are allowed to live here?

Well, as far as i can tell whinging hasn't done much for the UK,.. 20% HST there?

It's not you but CIC that decides who's qualified for PR. As a person who was educated and worked in the US for more than a dozen years, why do I need a coyote to get into the US. Just laughable. I was in the US last month, and I saw many Canadians working in the US. What's wrong with that? Your comment just highlights the level of your ignorance.

But they do get more than 3 weeks holiday a year. Remember the poll tax and more recently the 10p tax? I agree that whinging doesn't always change things, but doing nothing is the best way to ensure you are shafted each and every time.

"3 weeks Holiday per year" is something that you negotiate with your employer, not the gov't. Many people get more than 3 weeks.

Yep.

It's the way it is. Or if it ain't broke, don't fix it not realising it is broke or never really worked efficiently in the first place.

A few years ago in NB, electricity rates went up and the government announced that all bill payers would get an 8% refund over the year from the province. It was all to do with tax I believe.

Instead of the power company simply billing the consumer 92% and getting the other 8% from the government, guess what.

Every single customer had to save every single bill and send them off to the power company who would then add them all up (even though they already knew how much the customer's bill over the year was) and calculate the 8% (even though the computer could easily identify that) and then send cheques out to every single customer, with a large and unnecessary mailing cost.

Inevitably there would be some cheques that would go missing so there would be even more administrative costs to add in investigation and replacement.

The system wasn't broken though; it was the way it was.

I wouldnt imagine writing his MP would do anything though...seeing as he doesnt have a vote...

On the other hand, the MP realises that when citizenship comes they will be able to vote:sneaky: When my citizenship came I was congratulated by no less than 5 local MPs and MPPs... I guess none wanted to cause offence and lose a potential voter:)

Actually though, aswell as hopefully bringing something useful to the table as an immigrant, isn't it also our job to assimiliate into our adopted communities?

Maybe thats the wrong way around. With 20% of the population immigrants, perhaps Canada should be assimilating all the ideas that are brought here from around the world and exploiting the best ones.

But I still dont support spending more money to fix the wait times for PR and citizenship when other areas of more universal benefit are facing spending cuts.

Where did you get this idea? I can move to the US anytime. I'm just taking my time to get my CA citizenship.

That's none of your business, pal, and I said I'd stick it out. Why are you dragging this into the mud? There's no more to discuss. Got it, old man?

He's the one who started personal attacks, treating me like some kind of a wetback.

But what you seem to be saying is you want the best of all worlds and Canadian taxpayers to pay for it, change the system so you can go live somewhere else sooner. As a Canadian I have not seen anything wrong with the system other than perhaps it is not strict enough over who gets in and the residency rules. Writing to my MP on that one.

They system may be slow, but for people who genuinely intend to make their home here it is but a minor inconvenience. As a Canadian citizen and taxpayer I don't want immigrants being allowed into the country granted residency and citizenship so they can come back years later to retire and sponge off the system many hard working Canadians have paid into.

I have paid taxes for three years and will do so for more years to come. After getting my citizenship, I'll move to the US where there are probably twenty times more jobs in my field. Work there for many years and come back to Canada with my savings to retire. What's wrong with this picture? Nothing. It benefits CA by bringing money into its economy. I didn't say anything about changing the system. I said I'd stick it out. Why do you guys keep putting words into my mouth? Is this the way all the threads here spiral into a babble of nonsense?
