I plan on marrying my american fiance and sponsoring him into Canada. My question is how long will he have to wait to be able to work. Will he be granted work authorization right away? He wants to be able to start working as soon as possible.

if you marry him then he comes to live with you in Canada and you apply from within
Canada, then you can file for an open work permit when you submit your application
and then once they recieve their approval in principal(AIP) they will be granted that
work visa and can then work freely until they get PR status. If you dont apply for
the work permit when you submit you application you can wait and apply for it once
you get yoru AIP it will jsut be delayed a bit logner thats all. the time to getting
your AIP for most people recently seems to be around 3-4 months after applying, but
it could be quicker ona good day or it could take a lot longer. he will also have to
get things like a medical and police clearances from FBI and states so if you havnt
done that before you are ready to apply expect a few weeks to a month or so wait for
all those to come through. If you get married and you return to Canada and he stays
in the States and apply from outside Canada, then he can't work until he gets PR
status and lands unless he secures a jbo and applies for a work permit seperatly or
qualifies under NAFTA. that outside process is aimed at taking 6 months but can be
quicker or longer depending how busy they and how complicated the case is (say if he
moved aorund a lot and was in the military etc) But for you i would presume you would
apply from within Canada. So all in all if you are ready to apply once you are
married and he moves you can expect to be able to work anywhere from say 3months +
