Air Canada, Air Canada or Air Canada.

Likely your only choices over the winter. Check out Icelandair though I think they might fly to Halifax via Rjekjavic.

Or, hub through the USA. Lots of flights into Halifax from places like Boston, NY or Philly.

This is a clear case of a need to use a travel agent.

I don't think you'd want to risk going to Boston in the winter, NY or Philly maybe, but American have a cheap service from London to Charlotte, that's a hub and not weather prone, if you can get from there to Halifax it might work.

I would try one of the flight finder sites such as www.opodo.co.uk they will find a routing option for you, and give a choice. I have found in the past that a stopover somewhere can reduce the cost considerably.

That's not always true. When I booked the ticket for my trip to Vancouver last week, the direct flight came out much cheaper than one with a connection. Most of the time the rule holds, though.

there don't appear to be any 'cheap' flights to Halifax at all.
last May we flew to Ottawa for £139 out and £149 return (that's for each of us)

now I cant find any flights for less than £500!

Get used to it, sweetheart. The days of cheap Transatlantic travel are long gone. Just wait until you start taking internal flights in Canada.
