Hi there, not sure how long your reccie will be, but if you can you must head up to Grand Beach (Grand Marais) one day, it's one of the best sandy beaches in the whole of North America. I owe(d) my wonderful tan to it ;-)
Anita :-) (whose tan has now faded in the British 'summer')

Beach about 40 meters wide and roughly 3km long
5 beach hut sized shops and a couple of hot dog fries vendors with a Bar resturant all at 1 end nothing at the other.
Nice sand, nice beach volleyball areas, nice parks for little kids and clean water ( this week, its a lake, a really big lake, so things circle around sometimes)
But in general would say nice beach - nowhere as nice as most sandy beaches around the uk but 100 times better than stony beaches like Southsea.
Also it looks really coolwhen the waves are frozen solid.

I loved Grand Beach! It's as nice as any Caribbean beach I've been on - well, the sand is, the water's obviously a bit bogging and I didn't ever stick more than my toes in it for fear of catching something But the sand and dunes are superb. If you can stand the bugs it's worth waiting until sunset, really beautiful.
We went there one Boxing Day, you're right about the waves - little heaps of ice Was a bit scary though, too many snowmobilers tearing along with no regard for pedestrians...

Re: Winnipeg
Is there much diving going on over there?
Used to dive a lot in lakes when I was in South Africa, different climate but lakes are generally OK for in water vis.
Cheers Chris
PS I'm a qualified commercial diver, so maybe another job option

I'm told the big lakes in MB are just great big Puddles, not very deep at all. Falcon lake may be different (Meteor Crater), and there is Lake of the Woods.
The only divers I've seen here are the Police ones dragging the odd body out of the River.
