Re: Winnipeg
It was closed by the City early last year, but has since been refurbished, or so I am led to believe by its web site ( http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-housing-...QAdIdZ45360033 ), so you should be OK there.
It in a reasonable part of the Downtown, it has a very popular bar/club just down the street. (you may or may not want to frequent it depending on your gender orientation http://gios.ca/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1)
I would think is was the ideal place for a young person to live.

Re: Winnipeg
Hi all, just looking at options in Winnipeg for my family. Ay Ideas on areas to suit our needs (so I can make sure I spend time checking out the right ones on a reccie visit )?.
We have 2 kids; a 14 year old and a 3 year old
Need to work in manufacturing /engineeering/machining
Wife would like to go shopping on a regular basis
Would like to buy a house in a decent community (which Winnipeg sounds like it has lots of)
Any suggestions from anyone with the experiences under their belts would be much appreciated .
Cheers Chris

Re: Winnipeg
The further you get away from the downtown, the better it gets.
The South & South West (Tuxedo, Riverheights,Lindenwoods, Charleswood) are the most expensive areas.
Then.
St Vital (South) St James/Assinaboia (West)
Then
Maples/Garden City/West Kildonan (Northern part of the City)
Then
East Kildonana & Transcona (eastern)
They all have good shopping, good schools etc.
To cross the City in Rush Hour will take from 45 minutes to the Hour, so most people commute is 15 to 30 minutes at the most.

And the problem is further compounded by there being jobs in your list in every area.
So you might need to be more detailed in your list of work -
Also what is the 14 year old into?
As some schools offer different curricilums and teaching methods.
Also some areas are better suited for out-of school hobbies.

Grah,
I have worked in various positions, all involving various mechanical skills, I wont bore you with a list, but to be basic I am a skilled (apprenticeship served) machinst/fitter, CNC Miller;programmer/setter with 20 years of experience. This would usually put me in a machine shop on an industrial park.
The 14 year old is into all sports but especially football and athletics, he and his mum are going to have to learn to skate for the winters though (should be a laugh, I have visions of my Mrs turning into bambi at the first sight of a frozen lake)
He is doing very well at school here and, this is my biggest concern, how does the schooling compare at secondary level?
Will he be able to just pick up at a similar level as here in his various subjects?
Cheers Chris

MB-Realtor,
Thank you, I will be looking into the homes for those areas you suggested along with trying to find a few industrial areas within the vicinity.
It's just a case of trying to get priorities sorted, so that I can concentrate my efforts here and on a reccie trip. Once I get over I can always have good look around
Cheers Chris

As in Feb he said -
I work for the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. It is a government Crown Corporation, and a nice place to work.
Even so, the tradesperson shortage has meant that they cannot find suitable people to fill the positions and are considering looking to hire from abroad.
2 Industrial Electricians
1 Machinist
2 Industrial Mechanics (fitters)
