Our "new" jeep that we bought last spring, the first trip to the mountains resulted in a small crack which has since spread 80% across the screen. However, I think it is all the pebbles they use in the gritting here in Winter that causes the most damage. I'm reluctant to replace it now, certainly until they sweep the roads next spring, even though it has spread nearly all the way across.....

Ours is still under warranty too........ will have to investigate whether its covered either by that or on the insurance...... and like you said no point replacing till the spring.

I love the City of Calgary definition of gravel. That stuff they put down is not gravel they are rocks nothing less.

A word of warning regarding cracked windshields.

If said crack is in the drivers line of vision you can be ticketed by the police. So depending on where the crack is it may require replacement before spring no matter what.

Cheers
Steve

Can't you just tell them that the crack happened five minutes ago and you're on your way to the repair shop?

I suppose you could.

Whether he/she would believe you or not is another matter.

Well that was certainly the case in the UK, but I'm surprised to hear it is so here. As I mentioned, a very high proprtion of cars have cracked windscreens here, many many of them extending all over, so I assumed they did not have that rule here.

Mine started way over on the right, and it is only the recent cold weather that seems to have encouraged it as far as the driver's side, but it is well below the line of vision in which my gaze habitually scans, and heading south, so I guess it is OK for a while yet.

Aren't you more worried that the windscreen plays a huge part in the structural integrity of the front of your car in the event of an accident?

Read this from about halfway down.

I'd imagine that whatever it costs to replace that windscreen now is worth it.

Well, I wasn't, cos I wasn't aware of that before reading your post. I'll tell hubby. I'll have a new windscreen for Christmas instead of that nice watch he's promised me. Sigh.

Sorry

I didn't know either until I had a big stone chip in my windscreen last year and my Dad showed me some awful crash test video ... (tried to find it just now, but can't). I stops your airbag activating properly too, apparently.

Passenger airbag, only in some designs.

Dont forget, airbags are really only there to protect stupid americans who wont wear a seatbelt. If you have your belt on, all airbags really do is add to the cost of repairing the vehicle.

So, a better idea would be to have a couple of steel spikes pointing out about 12 inches from the steering wheel/glove box? That would be a fairly good incentive to buckle up.

Sure, sounds good.

Canadians of course would have the good sense to put a couple of corks on the pointy ends...just in case

From the Autoglass website:-

The windscreen provides up to 30% of your car's structural strength, so it could protect you and your passengers from being crushed if the car rolls over.

Many passenger airbags also rely on the windscreen to work properly.
Coachbuilder/windscreen fitter says:

The airbag relies on the windscreen being in place and secure for it to operate correctly.

The air bag is held in place by the windscreen when it deploys hence no windscreen = airbag somewhere over bonnet instead of being squashed in between you and windscreen taking all the momentum away.

This is why all modern cars have bonded windscreens instead of being held in a rubber gasket as the older gasket type of window would be pushed out when the airbag deployed making it totally inneffective.
