Our "new" jeep that we bought last spring, the first trip to the mountains resulted in a small crack which has since spread 80% across the screen. However, I think it is all the pebbles they use in the gritting here in Winter that causes the most damage. I'm reluctant to replace it now, certainly until they sweep the roads next spring, even though it has spread nearly all the way across.....

Ours is still under warranty too........ will have to investigate whether its covered either by that or on the insurance...... and like you said no point replacing till the spring.

A word of warning regarding cracked windshields.
If said crack is in the drivers line of vision you can be ticketed by the police. So depending on where the crack is it may require replacement before spring no matter what.

Whether he/she would believe you or not is another matter.

Mine started way over on the right, and it is only the recent cold weather that seems to have encouraged it as far as the driver's side, but it is well below the line of vision in which my gaze habitually scans, and heading south, so I guess it is OK for a while yet.

Read this from about halfway down.
I'd imagine that whatever it costs to replace that windscreen now is worth it.

I didn't know either until I had a big stone chip in my windscreen last year and my Dad showed me some awful crash test video ... (tried to find it just now, but can't). I stops your airbag activating properly too, apparently.

Dont forget, airbags are really only there to protect stupid americans who wont wear a seatbelt. If you have your belt on, all airbags really do is add to the cost of repairing the vehicle.

From the Autoglass website:-
Coachbuilder/windscreen fitter says:
The windscreen provides up to 30% of your car's structural strength, so it could protect you and your passengers from being crushed if the car rolls over.
Many passenger airbags also rely on the windscreen to work properly.

The airbag relies on the windscreen being in place and secure for it to operate correctly.
The air bag is held in place by the windscreen when it deploys hence no windscreen = airbag somewhere over bonnet instead of being squashed in between you and windscreen taking all the momentum away.
This is why all modern cars have bonded windscreens instead of being held in a rubber gasket as the older gasket type of window would be pushed out when the airbag deployed making it totally inneffective.
