Default Where's best to live in NS

Doing some research where to live in Nova Scotia, i am a truck driver and my better half is a nurse. We would want somewhere a bit rural but close to places for job opportunities. Any suggestions

Hi Andy,

You should probably search for posts or contact Andy (andy_sheila http://britishexpats.com/forum/member.php?u=35971), who is a truck driver, and his wife Sheila who is a nurse. They live in a place called Kentville in NS, which is "a bit rural but close to places for job opportunities".

They will probably let you and your wife move in with them, because you are the same people (if your wife is called Sheila, I will get very spooked)

Cheers
Tuppence

Well there are many areas to live that are outside city limits and considered rural. I guess it all depends what you are interested in and jobs. Have you looked at the map to see any areas that appeal to you? Have you looked at any of the job sites such as www.careerbeacon.com or jobspress.com
Also have alook at the realestate available to you...if you haven't already.. www.mls.ca
Have you ever been here before?

Thankyou for your replies. Keep looking at maps but still undecided, at the end of the day location will probally be down to where we can get work. Have looked at lots of real estate and love some of the houses we have found, although we shall probally rent intially. Never been to Nova Scotia, however we were at a family wedding in Toronto 2yrs ago and travelled around and a long time ago i spent 6 months in Alberta, Medicine Hat at the British army traing unit.

I would strongly recommend a reccie visit before you get a job if at all possible.

On our first visit we stayed in the Annapolis Valley which, after researching the areas, we thought it would suit us best.

After the first week we knew it wasn't where we wanted to live.

If I had got a job purely based upon my research, I would probably have applied to a hospital in AV. When I got there and realised that I wanted to move, it would have been an unnecessary upheaval and a real pain to re-organize work permit, housing schools etc.

Whilst I wouldn't want to say anything negative about the AV as I know others have found it great and have chosen to live there. I am just choosing it to illustrate the point that where you think you will like doesn't always pan out.

I agree - we toured all over before settling on our area on the North Shore.

I recently was over for a reccy and look for a house and tried a couple of areas but liked the feel of Amherst and that is where we are buying our house, just waiting for confirmation for mortgage. Hubby hasn't been but happy with my feelings. If you have the time look for going over for a visit otherwise rent whilst you decide where you want to live.
