Where to stay, Reccie Kamloops and Vernon
Anyone have any advise on a good place to stay to get a feel for each of these towns? I don't want to book myself into an Inn in the wrong part of town

My mother-in-law's cousin owns the attached bed and breakfast,

Its just 20 mins away from from Kamloops (just off the Coquihalla), and overlooking the beautiful Lac Le Jeune. Having stayed there myself, I can guarantee that if its natural beauty and getting away from it you want, you will be pushed to find anything better than this!!

In Vernon you could stay at my parents place
Actually, the Vernon Lodge is a good place. Or it use to be anyway. I haven't lived there for 20 years but do get back a few time a year to visit family.

There's a huge choice in Kamloops, and not really a 'wrong' part of town.
Depending on budget, the Plaza Hotel on Victoria St (heart of downtown) is recommended, or there are all the major chains like the Accent Inn, Best Western, Coast Canadian etc. They're all 5 mins drive or less from downtown. Kamloops is quick and easy to get around, so wherever you choose you won't be disadvantaged.
Vernon has similar, if slightly more limited choice - it's only 45-50 mins from Kamloops, so depending on your itinerary is easily commutable for day trips to explore the area.
If you've any specific questions about the area, drop me a line, and look us up when you're over and I'll show you around

I live on the east side of the city (Barnhartvale) and take the old highway to join the road south to Vernon (just over 70kms from my door) - easily cuts out 15 minutes. I guess from downtown it's nearer the hour mark.

Brilliant. Thanks for all your suggestions. I will check them out. Glad to hear there arn't really any wrong parts of town in Kamloops. That is excellent news.
Rob, the B&B looks lovely, but the point of this trip will not to be away from it all, but to see what it all is, if that makes sense

Hi Pebblebeach
We stayed in Vernon and Kamloops on a recce last winter and in both cases used the Holiday Inn Express. Both were adequately located and had free internet access and breakfast as well.
I would agree with RICH that it would be hard to find a bad part of town if you stick with the usual larger chain type motels.
Regards

I can recommend a good B+B in Vernon, reply or PM me if you want details.
Avoid some of the motels downtown, I forget the names so be sure to check the reviews online, some are real flea pits.

We stayed here, it's well equipped and quiet. The owners even invited up up for a drink! Bit out of town though.
