Hi
My husband has a chance at getting a job in halifax. Im jumping the gun and looking into it in case he gets the job mainly as we have to young children and want to know as much about the place if he gets the job. Our boys are 3 and 2 so would like somewhere family friendly that's near the shipyard as this is where the job could potentially be. I have been looking at houses and things but they pretty much all say lovely area but surely they cant all be lovely everywhere has bad places.
Anyone that can help with some information would be great!
Thanks Jenny

Plenty of nice areas, halifax is quite spread out if you go out the downtown core including the other side of the harbour, will you have a car or be relying on public transport? What's your budget?

From the information that we have been given they will be matching his wage from here so that will be around $88,000 a year, not sure about the travel we will probably get a car but we only have one here and he bikes to work whilst i have the car, With not really knowing much about what costs are and what wage is needed to survive any information would help.

For halifax that is a good wage, will you have a lump sum towards a house or looking to get a mortgage based on that income? in terms of areas the budget for your house will dictate areas available and whether you want to be right down town or on the outskirts and cycle/drive/bus in.
Downtown areas avoid gottingen street area
Outside downtown lots of nice areas, like I say depends on your budget and how far out you want to be, within 20 mins you can look at cole harbour, eastern passage, tantallon, Bedford, Fall River, enfield at a push,

we will probably look to rent for a little while until we get our bearings and decide where we want to live. How much does it cost monthly to live generally with a car and amenities such as internet, mobiles and tv? Is $2000 a lot to rent a month?

Car and house insurance 160 a month
Groceries at least 600 a month family of 4 and we shop around for deals
Water/sewage none as we are well and septic, no idea of this cost
Gas- depends on your car use
All very subjective like I say depends on so many things

yeah that is gross so roughly about that. we don't tend to do much we just like to have a couple of holidays a year and most of our money goes on things for boys. If he gets the job i just like to know that we will be financially safe and that the boys will be in a nice area to grow up. im a bit of a worrier!

it is a permanent job so they do all the visa applications and then citizenship if we choose so. Im not sure on the holidays i know they are significantly less than they are here so will probably end up being the one holiday a year.

no i very much doubt he would. he was in the army and did some time in canada but i think even he has his limits, so public transport would be the way for him!

Not likely to be feasible. Public transport in NS is pretty shocking to be honest- it's designed to get people in/out of the city centre, but unless you live near a bus depot, you'll have to drive there. They don't have bus stops every few hundred metres like they do in the UK.
