Where have all the jobs gone?

Re: Where have all the jobs gone?
I dunno, we've lost a lot in manufacturing in Ontario, many suppliers I deal with have gone into chapter 11 due to inability to get credit, the job losses quoted on the radio news haven’t been good recently either, and Alberta has lost a lot of oil projects due to the drop price of crude per barrel..
The service sector is soft but that also makes it flexible, and at this moment a lot of those that got us into the mess are still working due to the need to get out of the mess..
Its the case you need an accountant when you start a business, you need him when you run it and you still need him when you go bust only then can you get rid of him, the service sector may be parasitic by nature, but it doesn’t die until after it’s host is dead either

Just to throw a slightly more positive note into this thread...
I came out to Vancouver and landed as a PR on January 20th, alone with no job, home etc to come to. 2 weeks to the day after landing I started work in an admin position placed by an agency, initially temporary for 3 months but with a good chance of it leading onto something longer term if all went well.

when landing / recce tripping i met with many employment agents (to me the most obvious route into the 'hidden network') and was left with a sense of optimism.
in fact this conclusion has been endorsed by a recent poll which found that increased consumer spending and a more positive outlook for the coming 6 to 9 months was becoming almost peppy in Lower BC!
in the meantime, i am 'stuck' in London trying to apply and secure something remotely, before committing to undermining my savings thru paying rent and bills etc come June time.

I'm always surprised when newcomers choose areas to settle based on scenery, weather or how 'British' the town name sounds.
Not all regional economies are equal. Some provinces only have one urban hub with few, if any, satellite economies to take up the slack or provide alternate opportunities.

I wouldn't take this article to be a true reflection of the current climate in general.

Re: Where have all the jobs gone?
Don't know you guys have been finding the job situ but it is dire here in Calgary at the mo.
Luckily for us OH has a job but I have been finding it very difficult to secure employment. Must have applied for over 50 jobs now and I am only applying for basic admin type jobs. My job in the UK was quite specialised within local government so I was not expecting anything of the same ilk but not to even get a admin job! Have even dumbed down my resume so as not to scare them off.
So anyone coming out on PR please be aware that it is as tough out here as in the UK.

Ditto I have been looking since January and have had one interview which came of nothing and have enrolled with 2 secretarial agencies and have heard nothing. I think it is just the sign of the times and maybe bad timing on our part. How are you by the way it is Rachel (cockney sparrow) who met you at Sam's bbq.

I for one moved here in 2004 when the economy was good, only chose this city (small-medium 70,000) because my then wife lived here.
But with the changing times the job market all but dried up, last I saw unemployment was 10%.
If I had money I would move to the city (Vancouver) where its not as bad job wise, but money is a bit short right now...

True. If you are picky, or fearful on a daily basis of losing your job then the city is your only choice. If you are banker, accountant etc. then the city is the place for you.
