I'm sure we'd all like to think that.

Are you honestly serious in that comment?

No, 15% is pretty much standard (well, 14% now in my case now that thats the sales tax amount) , its not cheap, but its cheaper than 20%, and the comment was a tongue in cheek one aimed at Biiiinks claim she couldnt work out the amount to leave anyway!

Totally serious. Whenever you are being helped by someone who doesn't work in a job which expects tips you know they are genuine when they go out of their way to help you. In restaurants, especially in North America you know the reason they are doing it is to get a bigger tip.

Does the reason really matter? The fact they are helpful is surely the point.

If tipping was not the norm, would the servers be as invested in getting you the right food at the right temperature in the right timeframe?

Customer service over here seems to be rather better than I remember it in the UK. Perhaps the expectation that service level will affect tip level is the reason.

You've made the distinction there by yourself. Some nice hard-working people don't depend on tips for their income. Some people are nice and hard-working because they do depend on tips for most of their income.

Maybe the reason wouldn't matter to some but i prefer it when people aren't false with me.

It's a good point about service in Canada being better than in the UK and i couldn't agree more. so i guess tipping does increase overall customer service. i still find it hard to see why there is such an emphasis put on it in certian industries and none in others. Why is it the done thing to tip a taxi driver but not the bus driver, air stewardess or cashier in a retail shop.

Exactly. It's all very strange and illogical.

When my son worked as a pizza delivery driver he bought his car and maintained and ran it strictly with tips. Never touched his wages. My daughter worked at MacDonalds, amongst others, and they never got tips.

Just had to add my 15%-18% worth. I tip on the basis of the food cost, I don't tip on the !3%+ tax charged for GST/PST more on booze. Also I don't tip the full wack on the wine, the restaurant has already marked it up at least 100%, so I'm not going to tip $8.00 for a $40.00 of wine.
