I'm saying that far from there being no other place quite like Toronto, Chicago is just like Toronto, similar industries, similar largely immigrant populations, similar appearance (as you point out), similar climate. The lake's on a different side but otherwise it's hard to tell one from the other. I'm not saying that Toronto is horrible, btw, just that it's not special.

I suppose I agree that New Mexico isn't like Florida.

That's chalk and cheese mate. The first thing I notice as soon as i'm 100 yards across the border. It is the people. Americans are so different from Canadians and that what make two cities so different.

I can't tell them apart. And I suppose I've slept with a couple of dozen of each.

Since coming onto BNE I have wondered what I missed when I was in the UK - which incidentally i left in the late 80's - and Canada is definately not like 1980's england - not a set of leg warmers in sight.

Canada is not for everyone - nor is the UK - I wonder, however, what some people are expecting to find - they seem to be much like a dog chasing after its tail.
Please do not hijack this thread like so many on here try to do. If so many people complain about the TV, The Cheese and the Art Galleries there must be some truth in it.

When I was talking about TV, I was refering to work.

Maybe back in the UK you had a mundane boring life and can be amused by simpler things in life !

Also when I refer to the 1980's I was referring to food for vegetarians in supermarkets.

If you are going to be-little someones opinion read the full OP.

I guess in your case the employment opportunities in the theatrical arts weren't all you hoped they would be, so everything else became an additional reason not to be happy here, even those things that would not, on their own, have made you unhappy enough to consider leaving. I hope you find things better back in the UK.
They were some of the more obvious observations! There are many more !

In the same way there is no place like New York, London, and many other cities!

May you stay happy for many years to come.

Not at all I have not attack anyone's opinion, if they have mad a statement relevant to my original post I will counter argue. Especially if they have made a comment that is not correct to the statement I have made or my situation.

The only person I have in anyway attacked was you, as you initially mentioned that my post could not be taking seriously because of the spelling and grammar mistakes !

I just pointed out a glaring gramatical error you made in that attack and now you are trying to make out I am attacking others.

It's just so childish !

We now find ourselves returning to blighty on the QM at the end of August. Financially poorer, but richer in many other ways.

Firstly I am going to try and keep this balanced as it would be too easy to blame Canada for all the problems. There are some advantages to the country but not enough to keep us here.

For anyone thinking of coming to the east coast especially, do not underestimate the weather, the winters here really are brutal and seem to be getting worse. I love the snow, but this was just too much. My Mother in Law in particular found it difficult and felt house-bound for a number of weeks. She is of an older generation of course, but even we were fed up by it.
On March 1st the OP stated this: from this thread: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=594883 in the Moving Back to the UK forum

I have to say now that we have made the decision to come back to Britain I am very excited about it.

We may have only lasted a year and I know how hard my Partner is finding have to return, but realises we have no choice! But I have no regrets, I am sure we will talk about returning in years to come and prehaps head to Vancouver. I guess it just was out time to be here.

Any advice regarding paperwork will be appreciated !
Now I'm a little confused.

Can the OP please explain how his partners Father in Law changed into his partners father and then into his Mother in Law in the space of four months?

Isn't your partner's father in law your own father, unless your partner is married to someone else and it's their dad, but if the partner is living with you why would you bring their ex's dad?
