Huh? Look at the Satellite view at Google Maps.

I suppose I could but how about I just walk around, for years, looking at the real thing? There's a patch of grass at about Jarvis and Queen with a cathedral or church or something on it, opposite La Maquette. After that there's some more at Allan Gardens, Jarvis and Gerrard, then Riverdale Park. Only the first is within 15 minutes of the market.

Some people may argue that Toronto may in fact actually extend farther than 15 minutes from the Kensignton Market?

My reference was to the St. Lawrence Market, from the Kensington one you have the choice of Queen's Park, the grassy bits within the bounds of the UofT or, at a pinch, Christie Pits.

Toronto is, I think, Bathurst to the DVP, lake to Bloor. Then there are the inner burbs out to the 427, the 401 and Vic. Park, then there's the sprawl.

Getting away from Toronto then, where does this silly expression "world class" come from and what's it supposed to mean? Canadians love it so I wonder if it's from a Rush song.

From leaders in cities, who are desperate to join the big league, but in reality are playing in the minors. In Vancouver, because they've done well in a couple of livability surveys, a lot of people think that it puts them up there amongst the 'world class' cities.

Very interesting. When it comes down to it, in terms of economics, political, cultural clout etc, Vancouver is 8th tier, not surprisingly. Toronto is the No.1 city in Canada in terms of clout, no doubt about it.

This article should be delivered to Gregor Robertson (Mayor). Next time, I hear someone banging on about 'world class' this and that in Vancouver, I shall remind them that in terms of economics, political and cultural clout Vancouver ranks below such luminaries as Jakarta, Caracas, Bogota, Jeddah and Sofia. Bournemouth with mountains.

Soon I shall have one daughter at university in Vancouver, one at university in Bournemouth(!). I shall ask them to verify this comparison.

It was. Like many others, it converted.

 Spendid. Both very pleasant places in their own right, but neither are anywhere near 'world class' status. My comparison, comes mainly from my idea that they are retirement type communities, near the sea, not noted for their employment prospects or dynamic economy.

Well, I don't think it too much matters, it's just a short conversion course to allow her to work in the UK. Much to her amusement, noting that she went to high school next to Maple Leaf Gardens and now works near Moss Park, it includes an introduction to working in a multi-cultural enviroment.

Obviously Bournemouth is better than Vancouver due to the fact it has a pier, 2 if you include Boscombe and a world class panto every year.

Also, the retirement comment is a bit of a myth.

Something milliemillie might want to look at that she probably doesn't do where she is now, is this:

you can get there on the streetcar so you don't need a driving license or parental chauffering. One of my daughters started sailing there, got hooked, and it would be fair to say that sailing has shaped her life since.

This sounds great, although i get terrible sea sick! :-(

Now that IS a silly statement. If that's your understanding of Toronto I would suggest you've never visited it or if you have you were wearing blinkers.

I lived there for 23 years and it is a decent place to live. But what else makes it stand out over any other major city? As for the multicultural argument, I would say it is more Asian than anything else. Otherwise, it has an array of ethnic restaurants and population just the same as most major cities these days. Montreal has far more character. Ever been there?
