I think you need to give things quite a bit more time. Ten months isn't that long. It takes a few years. I've been here nearly 4 and I still get quite unsettled sometimes. You're probably experiencing culture shock. There are recognized stages that people go through when they immigrate. It's even written about on the CIC website somewhere.

When someone told me that I was experiencing culture shock I thought they were wrong. But when I read up about it, it described my feelings quite accurately.

Yes. Firstly, searching for culture. Secondly finding Canadian culture shallow and materialistic. Finally, Lack of Culture Shock.

Nothing wrong with realizing that the place isn't for you. At least you took the chance. Best of luck going home to the UK.

I would agree with materialistic. I drive an old car here because I want to leave my money in the UK. The amount of comments I've had about the car is unreal. It seems that Canadians are much happier with financed cars, etc...

Depends which part of Canada they are from. Marrying a Canadian doesn't ensure a happy life in Canada lol.

She's a teacher. Teaching here pays a lot more and the job is a hell of lot less stressful. If it wasn't for that I'm certain we'd be back in the UK by now. She's Canadian but lived in England for 10 years. I think she is shocked at how much she has craved the things she loved about England.

My Canadian sister in-law came to the UK, she said that she couldn't do with the tiny little houses that people live in in the UK. I just couldn't live where they live though. Its like the arse end of nowhere's poor relative. But yeah, I can really appreciate that a lot of Canadians would find the UK a difficult place to live. I think where you're born plays a huge part. The things I find difficult to live with is not being able to walk to the places I need to get and not being able to just get what I want off amazon or ebay, next day for next to nothing. Sure you can get everything you need in Canada as long as you're prepared to pay a lot for shipping or drive for hours. Everything seems a bit "frontier" to me here. I miss the humour too. The only time I really laugh is when I'm on the phone to friends back home. From what I have found in my 11 months and 27 days here the biggest advantage is that you get a big house. Everything else seems to be a big compromise.

I think the reality is that no matter how much research you do, you'll never know how you'll feel about a place until you live there.
