Is it true that rain in Southern Alberta is very rare? Also, is it true that BC gets TWICE the rainfall than the U.K?

Kev.

"I think you will have to wait for them to build the road N to S first as there is nothing between Panama and Columbia (Darien gap). Just being a smartass (There is a ferry around I think). Sounds fun. take lots of $$$ for bribes".

I wondered about your comments iaink - my granddaughter told me that her uncle is driving from Canada to Chile and it would take three weeks!! Mind you she probably got the story from her mother who tends to get this totally opposite from the truth. Is it possible to drive from Canada to Chile?

Rare might be an extreme word for the whole of sounthern Alberta but there are areas that are semi-arid (The Badlands).

On average - yes BC probably get twice the rainfall than the UK. But it's silly to go by averages in a province as diverse and as large as BC. Henderson Lake on the west coast of Vancouver Island is the wettest place in Canada (of places that are actually measured) and gets about 6 metres of rain a year so that drives the average rainfall for BC up significantly. Much of coastal BC is in fact 'rain forest' in terms of climate but other parts of BC are some of the driest areas of Canada. So averages are pretty meaningless really!

And here's a weather stat to make your hair curl: we were on the tube in London yesterday and saw an ad for a "get a new life!" type of exhibition opening. It stated that the UK gets, on average, 73 days of sunshine/year. (which I actually refused to believe but apparently is accurate). The rainiest place in Canada? Prince Rupert, with 115 sunny days! (Not to mention the lovely Calgary, with 300 sunny days/year) A breakdown of all the extreme categories for Canadian cities is at http://www.pacificwebsites.com/where..._in_canada.htm

When we visited the UK with our Canadian plates on the car - people actually asked if we had driven from Canada
