Hi, roseinedmonton, and welcome to the BE forum.
There are several BE members in and around Edmonton, and I'm sure some of them will be along in a while.
For now, you may be interested in some previous discussion threads about Edmonton:
Hope that helps.

Hi there
Are you coming to the city itself or one of the satellite towns? We live in Sherwood Park which is 20 mins from the city and a wonderful place to live with a young family. I have two small boys of 7 and 4 and we are never short of activities to do as a family here.
Schools are good, shops and services a plenty, and tons of recreation opportunities. Weather can get a tad chilly, but like anywhere in Canada, dress appropriately and its really no big deal. Sun shines a lot in the 'big sky' and the Rockies are 3 to 4 hrs drive from here....................depending on where abouts in the city you live and how speedy you drive on these long straight roads.
When do you arrive?
Debbie

Sherwood Park would be a closer commute to Nisku. Especially now we have the new portion of the Anthony Henday ringroad opened around the east of the city.
Nisku is a big industrial area
and very close to the airport and the towns of Leduc and Beaumont would be a very short commute. Beaumont is nice. Not as many facilities as Sherwood, but a very nice town, and developing all the time.
Sherwood Park is terrific, but I am a little biased about the place.
If you need any further help or have any questions then I am happy to respond.

We are in Sherwood Park too......and love it!!!!
It has a lovely family feel and I am told there are no bad schools here.
There are parks a plenty for the children, to be honest there are not enough days in the week to do all the activities the little ones want to do.
We have been here since March, prior to this we were in the SW of Edmonton, we loved it there as well but the house prices were crazy, so after being told so many good things about SP by hubby's colleagues and visiting with R2D2....here we are, and loving it.
We know quite a few people in St Albert and from what we've heard it's great there too!

Hi there,
You might also want to consider Leduc which is only a 5 -10 minute drive to Nisku, we lived there for over 10 years. It is quite a nice friendly place that has got better in recent years. Lots of new houses being build and new stores opening all the time. As someone else said it is also very close to the airport, about a 10 minute drive, very handy for visiting relatives
Schools are also pretty good and Leduc also has the Black Gold Arena which is a big sports facility, ice rinks, swimming pool etc.
As someone else said Beaumont is a nice little town but doesn't have the facilities that Leduc has and is about a 10-15 min drive from Nisku.
The drive from Nisku to St Albert is about a 45 minute drive, of course longer during winter when the roads aren't so good.
Good luck with the sale of your house and also your move to Canada

We are just a little concerned regarding our son's education, he is 15 years of age and is in his second to final year. We have read that children leave school at 15 to 16 years of age and this may place our son in a sticky position. What we do not know is how he will be placed in a school, as in Engand he has made his choices on what subjects he wished to study e.g. all three science subjects etc. We have read some where, Canadian children left school at the age of 18?
We are currently coming to Canada on a work permit, whilst our permenant residency paper work is being processed. Do you know if the children need any study permits, as we have read about this somewhere.

Our son is 15 (16 in July) basically kids can leave school at 16 or stay on until 18 and graduate at the end of grade 12.
We came on TWP in October 2005 and we had study permits for both our kids and were asked for them by the schools, but I'm not sure if this has changed.
We live 2 hours away from Edmonton in Drayton Valley so it would appear there are a few of us around Edmonton. Hope this helps
