I agree, and then they give you this look like "why don't you get out of my way" WTF. It happens here in Whitehorse too. There's a bridge I cross to get to my house that has a sign on it that clearly says CYCLISTS MUST DISMOUNT AND WALK THEIR BIKES ACROSS FOOTBRIDGE.

Do they do it? No. Do they cycle straight towards me and my 5 year old? Yes.

Just a quick note. When I first moved to Canada, way back in the day!, Calgary used to license bicycles. It became unwieldy and unenforceable so was stopped. Not sure that it made any difference to how cyclists rode. It wasn't really of much help when the bike was stolen either.
My pet peeve as a runner and a walker are the cyclists who don't let you know when they are coming up behind you on the pathway. If you don't have a bell just yell out "passing on your left" or something.
By the way my OH is a cyclist and is more than happy to slow down, stop, call out, ring a bell and realise that we all share the road! It's courtesy that we all need!

I never bother to seek agreement in arguments like this. I only aim to expose bogus safety concerns for the attitude issues they usually are.

I have no problem with attitude, btw, as long as it's not dressed up as some kind of pseudo-objective argument about hazards created by cyclists. Really, in the big scheme of things (eg 400+ road deaths a year in AB alone), cyclist actions - however objectionable - are almost completely benign in safety terms.

Just go out with an anti cyclist kit
It contains a few thumb tacks and a short piece of iron bar which it easily speared between someones spokes. (the velocity one reaches when summersaulting over the handel bars is quite impressive

The other tactic is to run towards the cyclist making gorilla impressions and howling like a banshee they soon fall off and cry over the insuing gravel rash.

Also try cyclist tail gating where you ride right up behind them and just nudge their back wheel with the bush bar of your 4.6ltr Range Rover ( While making gorilla impressions and howling like a banshee at the wheel) The look of terror behind their stupid safety hats and mirror sunglasses is rather photogenic

I was walking down the sidewalk a few years back and got hit by cyclist who was riding on the side walk, dumb ass tried to place the blame on me, I didn't even see him since he was behind me when the collision took place.

Out here the issue is lack of room on the roads for cyclists so they ride on the sidewalk and have no issues overtaking pedestrians it seems.

Its an offence under the motor vehicle of BC act to pass on the right:

Passing on right

158 (1) The driver of a vehicle must not cause or permit the vehicle to overtake and pass on the right of another vehicle, except

(a) when the vehicle overtaken is making a left turn or its driver has signalled his or her intention to make a left turn,

(b) when on a laned roadway there is one or more than one unobstructed lane on the side of the roadway on which the driver is permitted to drive, or

(c) on a one way street or a highway on which traffic is restricted to one direction of movement, where the roadway is free from obstructions and is of sufficient width for 2 or more lanes of moving vehicles.

(2) Despite subsection (1), a driver of a vehicle must not cause the vehicle to overtake and pass another vehicle on the right

(a) when the movement cannot be made safely, or

(b) by driving the vehicle off the roadway.

Sorry, a cyclist can't pass a vehicle on the right in the same lane when the car is turning right, he should follow behind and yield to the turning vehicle, just like in a car. He could have also passed on the left or changed lanes.

Happen you should try google it works wonders. So no, he didn't have the right to bawl me out.

The Ironman in Penticton had problems last year with criminal idiots throwing thumbtacks onto the road. The result is a lot of punctures and cyclists reacting by moving to ride in the centre of the road. I heard one story of a very competitive woman who had to give up her dreams of a podium finish because of 3 punctures on the bike leg.

Worse, was the guy who took a complete spill and ended up dieing from his injuries.

So, forgive me, while I realise the comment was made in jest, I don't find advocating manslaughter for cyclists funny.

I cycled everywhere for years in the U.K. I gave up after we had children as I couldn't justify the trade off between me enjoying cycling & my children losing their father. One of the things I really looked forward to when we settled here was rekindling my love of all things two wheeled, imagine my disappointment when I realised that motorists here were as thoughtless, sanctimonious & downright dangerous as they were in Britain when it came to their sense of self righteousness over "ownership" of the road..:frown:
