Default Visa Timelines

If I have a tourist visa to Canada that is valid for 6 months, but do not come to Canada say, 3 months after the date of issue, am I legally allowed to remain for only another 3 months??
Or, am I allowed to remain in Canada for 6 months dating from the stamp I received upon the point of entry, when I went through customs?

Usually 6 months from the date of entry, BUT they can make it shorter.
