You can get a pet one now, I am only in research stages atm.

That's the one we have. Worth every penny for us.

It's scheduled to go every day to coincide when i take the dog out at lunchtime so by the time i get home the place is nicely vacuumed.

Do they actually work then??? I imagined it to be a bit of a novelty thing and not so good?

How do they get into corners or do you just get a build up of curved fluff at those bits

Just get the Dyson. The cheapy alternative you buy will be crappy, and then you spend a fortune on central vac and that's really annoying too, dragging the bloody great hose about the place.

ie they suck the dirt out of the corners where they dont actually physically go.
I could live with a bit of dirt to hand clean occasionally if it does 99% of the rest. We had a cheap one, and it sucked, but not in a good vacuumy way. It kept getting wedged under things and couldnt get out, and the batteries died very quickly with the partial discharge/ charge thing that new batteries are more immune too. Real Roombas are supposed to be superior in the getting wedged respect.

You do have to clean the corners every so often, you will also eventually get a wear mark on skirting board from where it runs along the edge too..
It can't do stairs either, the upside is its sensors usualy prevent it frorm trying too.....

But it generaly cleans better than most normal vacuums IMHO, largely because it doens't stop until lit runs out of charge or untill its sensors stop registering dirt, or its logic circuits say its covered the area well enough (in my reckoning thats a minimum of twice)...

I would also say don't buy a Dirt Devil. We bought an upright one and it kept cutting out. Friends bought the same model around the same time as us and had the same problems too. We ended up cutting our losses and bought another Dyson - cheaper here now than they used to be.

When you eventually buy a central vac, get one that also has a motor on your roller attachment as opposed to just the motor on the main wall unit. Our one doesn't have this and its completely useless on carpet - not enough suck! Its OK on our tiled floors. I find it easier to use than an upright for getting into awkward places like under and around dining room chairs and for doing stairs too.

Now I use my central vac on the tiled floors and the stairs but then use my Dyson for all the carpeted areas.

My wife gets through vacuum cleaners faster than I get through underwear. We always bought cheap ones from Canadian Tire and such like, but they lasted a few months and always were poor quality and had basic flaws.
Then we bought a Miele S2 from Costco. It's well built, works really well, good solid machine. Wouldn't consider others if we had to change again.

Just to update we bought an upright Eureka vacuum cleaner from Walmart at the weekend. On sale 98 bucks from about 150. The reviews were all great for it. It claims to clean better than our old Dyson Model at a third of the price. I have to say I am, so far, absolutely thrilled with it. It's light to carry, has a really long lead and hose, lots of tools and is so powerful, in fact it almost pulls you along behind it! Boy does it suck...in a good way! Would def recommend
