Default UK Pensions in Canada - Is this true?

I saw this on a website linked to from the BBC Business page.

https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.u...-retire-abroad

A little way down the page there's a list of countries where annual increases are made automatically. I thought Canada was one of those countries where UK State Pensions stayed static from the first day you started receiving it.

Not according to this website. It clearly lists Canada as being one of the countries where annual increases are paid.

Is this a new change in legislation, anyone know?

Well, curious isn't it.

This link https://www.gov.uk/state-pension-if-...-state-pension says that you get an increase if you live in a country that has a soical security agreement with the UK, then this page http://www.dwp.gov.uk/international/...-of-countries/ lists the countries and Canada is in the list.

As you say, has it changed, you would think there would be a fanfare.

Curious, indeed. I hope this isn't good old government doublespeak. I'm staying tuned though, in case someone with more knowledge than either of us can fill us in a bit more.

A social security agreement co-ordinates the pension programs of two countries for people who have lived or worked in both countries.

Thanks for the links, Siouxsie. From a quick browse through, it seems that there's little to do with pensions, more to do with contributions to the UK insurance scheme from this end. So, still staying tuned. Cheers.

That is exactly what the Social Security agreement is, it has nothing to do with pensions - that was my point, lol.

I phoned the DWP this week for information on state pensions and was clearly told that if i was moving to Canada my state pension would not be indexed linked, i got the distinct impresssion that the person I spoke to was merely reading from a computer screen and not basing their answer on expert knowledge. I was also told the agreement between the UK and Canada was a limited agreement but it did include being able to transfer your contribution from a Canadian state pension to your UK state pension they were unable to confirm that the same agreement would apply with regards to the UK to Canada, I was told I would have to ask that question in Canada.

I believe moneyadvice were in error in their statement.

They mention Australia too, but the Social Security Agreement between the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia was terminated by Australia and ended on 28 February 2001.

Thanks guys. It's always been my understanding (well, more than that. I ruddywell know that UK pensions are not index linked in any way in Canada). So, clearly, that initial link is totally wrong.

Maybe one day with enough efforts by organisations such as UK pensioners lobby groups, the governments of both countries will get their act together. I'm sure not holding my breath, though.

Be well.
