Default UK Pensions to Canada

Hi,

Hope I am posting in the right place, after some guidance on this.

I have a private pension in the UK that I am looking to move across to my Canadian RRSP is this possible and how do I go about doing this?

Also is it possible to still make contributions to my state UK pension from Canada and be eligible for the UK state pension and CPP at the age of retirement, looking ahead as I am 33 now.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Have you spotted the wiki article on this forum on this subject yet? It is here:

Bottom line is yes, it is now possible, but with a VERY limited choice of providers and I do not know what their limitations might be (i.e. minimum age etc.).

Hi Davewarren88

UK pension transfers into Canada are currently only available for clients aged 55 and over. Therefore if you are currently 33 , you would be unable to move your UK private pension into an RRSP as things stand. Regulations constantly evolve, but currently that is the criteria in regards to transferring into Canada.

You can make on-going voluntary contributions towards your UK state pension until you have 35 years of contributions (for a maximum pension) - you need to contact the international department in the DWP in Newcastle. You should ask to make Class 2 contributions (for prior years, up to six years if it is several years since you paid NI in the UK), and you will be sent a short questionnaire to complete.
