Oh yes, I'm not on about a career break where I go travelling for a long period of Tine. I'm just on about short term braeks to spend time with family and friends - taking me up to a similar 5 week allocation that I get in the UK

I don't think you too much to concern yourself with in regard to this ........ if you have the skills and your future employer really wants your services ..like a previous poster has stated there is much room for negotiation. I have neigbours who never seem to be at work .......... Mind you one works for the Provincial Government and the other works for an Automotive Assembly Plant............................................. .....

I work in local government at the moment and I am educational to postgraduate level - so maybe I will have some room for negotiating. If not, maybe I will have to think about what kind of work I do in Canada - I def don't want to be the sort of person who works all day and never leaves the office. I def work to enable me to enjoy life and not the other way round
My eldest daughter is a Legal Secretary and works in the legal Dept of one of the big Unions here in Canada ......... she never seems to have trouble taking leave of absence whenever she wants it. She works to suit their requirements and they are more than willing to accomadate her requests. With her husband she spends a lot of time travelling. From what you have posted you should have no trouble coming to terms with your future employer.

That sounds quite positive. Thanks everyone for their advice.
Just wondering - MCrocker - you said that's why you moved to Canada - just wondering if it has worked out for you?
Thanks again

We live in a lake community so we get to enjoy that quite a bit. All the people I have met here are good fun and very friendly - we have great neighbours. I even agreed that the kids could have a dog so I walk a lot (not something I did much of in UK).

Mrs C. had 5 weeks in the UK (never managed to use it all). She came here and was offered 3 weeks (plus all public Hols for Alberta, Ontario AND Quebec-dont ask the reasoning behind that one, PLUS the days between xmas and new year). I BELIEVE so far she has taken the equivalent of 5 weeks hols all paid (not including the public hols or time between xmas and new year) and she will not have completed 12 months with her employer until 9th april.
SO go figure that one.
SO go figure that one.
