Hi, have moved to Vancouver recently and am having no luck finding a Doctor's surgery that will accept new patients. We are in east Vancouver and luckily have not needed to see a Dr yet, but with 2 young kids would like to know where to go if needed to. Anyone have any suggestions - and what are walk-in clinics? We have our Medical cards now.

Walk in clinic is where you show up and see whichever doctor is on duty. they don't have patient list, first come first served. Many people have been years without a family doctor and no prospect of finding one.

Ok - thanks. Thought that seemed to be the case. I suppose there is no continuity though.

You can use the College of Physicians and Surgeons BC website to see which doctors are accepting new patients.

According to the list there are 67 family doctors accepting new patients in Vancouver - hopefully one will be near you.

At the walk-in clinic I use there are four GPs and they post who is on duty when. If you want to see a particular doctor you turn up when they are on duty. You do have to wait your turn and this can sometimes be longer than you want but you get to know when they will be busy.

I tried this before and was met with lots of "no's!'

Try Dr Young on Commercial Drive -she is sometimes taking on patients - careful of the receptionists -they are hideous, BUT once past them Dr Y is fab . . . or the less than helpful receptionists may be able to advise of where else is recruiting . . .
