Would anyone be able to help. Is it possible for someone to travel to canada on holiday and take HGV lessons while there in order to gain employment? Or is it better to train here, then got to canada and exchange the licence? Are there companys there who are willing to take on hgv class 1 drivers with little or no experience?

Sorry for so many questions.... just trying to work out the best possible way to get to canada

There are a number of companies in Alberta who are taking on UK long haul drivers and one of the stipulations is that you need 3 years of class 1 trucking experience in the last 5 years.

Anyone exchanging their UK licence for an Alberta one would have to retake their heavy goods license anyway. When you exchange your UK license you get an Alberta class 5, which permits you to drive any veh, except a motorcycle, heavy truck or bus.

I'm in the same boat as you. Was going to take HGV lessons over here in UK first, gain experience here and then apply to Canada. Found out that the HGV licence from the UK is no good in Canada and that I'd have to take a Canadian test once over there anyway. Not 100% sure that there's a quick way to bypass this but I'm looking

Do check out the 'trucking' forum as it's a mine of information (good and bad but mostly good). It applies to other countries as well as Canada but the majority of posts are Canadian orientated.

As long as you have the experience required by the trucking firms in Canada, most will assist you in re-taking your heavy goods test. The issue is not the fact that you will have to re-take you test, it is the fact that you will need a certain number of years experience truck driving (this is certainly the case for Alberta)

I have lgv class 2 (4 years experience) as well as snow plough experience. Looks like I will do the LGV class 1 here then work for a couple of years, and try again.

I have a chance to do some courses in the UK (Hazmat, fork lift etc) would they be worth while? or should I try and get them in Canada (the British army will pay for some of the costs in Canada or complete course if in the UK)
