Hello,

I am looking to head to Canada in November or December to either the provinces; Ontario, Saskatchewan or Alberta only for a week, just as a first visit and to get a small feel before I head over next year on the IEC working holiday.

Advice I need;
- Best places to visit in either of these provinces.
- Best places in either of these provinces to get a feel of Canadian culture and what I can expect next year.
- I'm looking to share/rent a room for a week and have someone guide me around, mainly because I'm 17 and need any help about Canada I can get. Anyone know any websites or even people who can help me with that?

It's clear from your questions that you still have a lot of research to do.

The province of Saskatchewan alone is larger than all of the UK. You could fit all of France, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland in the province of Ontario, with room to spare. Alberta is equally as large as Saskatchewan. I think you'll have to narrow your focus to one province if you only have one week to spare. Even then, you will not be able to see all of any province with only one week. You may be able to see one or two cities.

Out of curiosity, why did you select Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario? What is it about these provinces that are pulling you in?

This BritishExpats forum is mostly for people seeking to reestablish their lives permanently in Canada, so they're looking for longterm advice. The advice I'd give a 17 year old looking for a fun place to live in Canada for a year would be completely different than advice I'd give a single man looking to establish a longterm career in a chosen field in Canada. If you're just here for a year, don't waste your time in places that, sure, may be quick and easy to get a job in the resource extraction industry, but might be completely uninspiring places to live as a 17 year old with only one year in Canada. You may also wish to elaborate on what you mean by "best"? Best place for what? Best for you? Since you don't give us any information about what you like to do, your interests, what your hopes and dreams are, it's hard for us to make any real useful recommendation on a place that would be best for you. Canadian culture differs from place to place - I'd hate to recommend a mountain resort town if you hate skiing, and I'd hate to send you to Saskatchewan if you were hoping to see the ocean. Canadian culture is shaped by the local geography, and the geography really changes from one province to the next. People in Ontario have better access to urban adventures. People in Saskatchewan are more likely spend their leisure time on the lakes fishing. People in Alberta have the Rockies on their doorstep. Etc. How do you imagine spending your time in Canada? What activities are you hoping to pursue?

Another piece of info that may or may not be relevant to you. The legal drinking age in Canada is 18 years old in the provinces Quebec, Alberta, and Manitoba, and 19 years old everywhere else. This may factor in where you decide to live.

If that's all the info you're going to give, then I'm going to give you my best guess answer. Go to Toronto. Be aware that you might have issues securing a hotel room because of your age (some have a minimum check-in age) - especially if you don't have a credit card. You can find cheap accommodation at www.airbnb.com and you might even get lucky enough to have your host(s) help you with tips on things to see and do, etc.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the IEC program has a minimum age of 18, and is likely to be full for the 2015 program by the time you turn 18.

So you will probably have to plan your IEC year for 2016 onwards.

It usually opens in December/January, and places are full almost instantly (it took 7 minutes last year I believe!). Your profile says you're not 18 until February, by then it's likely to be too late unless opening is delayed for any reason this year.
