Default Transporting goods

hi all,

forgive me, this is the first time of using a forum. I am emigrating to Canada in a month or so and looking for advice re shipping my belongings. I don’t have any furniture to transport so it’s mainly small personal items. That said I do have a bike frame and a turbo trainer that are bigger/heavier. I have looked online but all the sites assume you are transporting furniture etc. Any advice welcome please.

thanks in advance

Maybe check the special sub forum here.

If it is only a few boxes plus a couple of larger items then you're Airline might be able to do it for you at a decent price. Also some moving companies will charge you by the box with each box being roughly the size of a large suitcase. The one I met with recently just pick the boxes up and then send them to you via DHL when you're ready to receive them.

Hello and welcome to BE!

Likely your cheapest option if you don't have very much 'stuff' is to air cargo the boxes and turbo trainer, have the bike frame (and wheels?) as part of your luggage allowance - most airlines allow some 'sport' items - f you pan down on the Air Transat website it has about bikes: https://www.airtransat.com/en-CA/Tra...ght-Dimensions
In addition to your checked baggage allowance, we will accept at no charge 1 select sporting item up to 20 kg (44 lb) per passenger from the list below (valid items are shown as free; maximum weights vary).
Air Transat Cargo are very reasonable - my son used them to bring over a fair amount of 'stuff' and one of his friends used them to bring over tools and equipment.

Otherwise, look into 'groupage' or 'shared container' options - YouPackWeShip offer this, as do many others shipping companies.
There's quite a few threads on shipping so do have a quick look (use the 'search' function in the blue bar) and we also have a wiki article on shipping: https://britishexpats.com/wiki/Shipping-Canada

Don't forget your 'goods accompanying / goods to follow' lists.

As this is about general removals rather than immigration I've moved it to our main Canada forum.

Could I just point out that that particular 'sub-forum' is a "partner" forum, sponsored by a removal company so you won't get independent advice on it... but for general advice about packing / shipping etc., it's a good start.
As to the 'charge by the box' - a normal shipping company charges by volume for the complete load - I had boxes from 1ft square up to 4ft square plus bulky items, thin items and furniture - the quote / charge is by the total volume. I suspect you are using a forwarding agent, rather than a shipping company.

I haven't signed up with anyone yet, I just met when that company a few weeks ago because they had reps at an emigration expo taking place near my flat. I thought I might get a bit more useful info from them in person (which I didn't if I'm honest).
