Default Toronto utility bills

Hi all,

Just looking for to date rough utility costs that people spend each month based in Toronto region (don't know if it differentiates across Ontario?).

We have a max budget of around $2500 for apartment and utilities inclusive, so we were hoping an apartment/house in the region of $2300 would be doable with utilities taking it to $2500, or thereabouts.

Looking for summer and winter costs if possibles.

2-3 bedroom, 2 people. Cats also, so heat will be on in winter to keep place warm enough for them when we are out.

Thanks

If you get an apartment, in an apartment building, the utilities will be included in the rent. I would do that for the first year.

Some only include water and heat, but we still have to pay electric. I've read its quite a bit cheaper than in the UK but would be nice to budget accordingly.

Some of the apartments also don't have anything included which sucks, usually seem to be the more 'posh' ones. Whilst they look nicer, if it comes to light that we should expect to pay around $300 a month for all utilities, then they will probably be out of our range.

Dunno. Have lived in lots of apartments, all the ones in actual apartment buildings were "only pay for TV". If it's a condo building in which only some flats are rented then, yes, each unit will have separate billing. A few posters live in condos and might have a number.

my current place, oakville area, 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment, is about $108 for electricity and water (both handled by same company - Oakville Hydro) and gas (Union Gas / Enbridge) is about $20 a month. Internet is about $120. (1.5 gigabit plan) Yes, I know, stupidly expensive, but there is limited choice as too providers.

what’s your rent like. Oakville seems nice, but expensive.

We are looking at Oakville or Burlington currently, so would also be interested to know this.

Oakville or Burlington are our preferred options, I think the rental market in the GTA though is out of control. Depends on a few things if we end up moving or not. But potentially exciting times.

2 bed, 2 bath apartment in Oakville or Burlington (Condo building - private landlord) would run between $2000-2500 depending in size of unit and location. There are some rental buildings generally fewer amenities than a condo building and scruffier than can be a little cheaper.

Not bad I guess. It seems unsurprisingly that rent climbs as you move east towards TO. Looks like the whole do or don’t you use the 407 for the commute becomes a factor. However I am en early riser so hopefully that’s works in my favour.

I'm currently paying $1800 per month for a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment. I started a two year lease on the place in 2017

Totally spot on (hardly shocking ) with that pricing for a 2 + 2. If I were trying to rent the same place I'm in today that would be the range I'd have to pay.

For the 407, depending on how far you go, what you save in living further out, you could end up paying in 407 toll charges. I'm fairly certain my girlfriend said that to use the 407 to and from her office in Markham, from Oakville, it'd be around $1000 a month. Obviously one could use the 401, but then you might be sitting in a whole lot of traffic. I did ask her if she'd tried it, and she had not, and didn't overly wish to give it a shot, but I might be able to convince her to try it, just to see how painful, well how long really, it would take for her commute.

Toronto and Vancouver are the two most expensive places in Canada for housing, renting or buying.

Must you go to the Toronto area?

Why drive in at all if you are living in Oakville or Burlington? There are GO Trains (and bus's (which look like a coach) that will take you into Toronto.. there's also a 407 drop off area where you can pick up a GO bus into TO. Far cheaper (and a lot easier on the stress levels) than using the 407 and driving in!

I think the job is in Brampton so transit really isn't an option.
