thinking of nanaimo
 

hi there

anyone living in or relocating to nanaimo. we are in kelowna and looking at possibly moving to nanaimo.we have a young family and wondering what family life would be like there, crime rates, education etc.

Hi Kyla, we live in the Cowichan Valley, in between Victoria and Nanaimo and love living here. There are some more people on here from Nanaimo so hopefully they will see this and can give you their input. We feel the Island is a great place to live and have no regrets.:)

Hi kyla :) we have been here for 21/2yrs, my kids love it but they are teenagers so probably older than yours. I work for the school district & worked in a primary school back home.......personally I would say education is less structured than home but the kids here on the whole seem like a happy bunch (the ones I've worked with anyway) can't compare it to Kelowna as I've never been.

I'm looking after a house this week for a (ex-pat) family from Kelowna, they've lived here for 9 months & although they moved for work rather than not liking where they lived I know that they love living near the ocean & enjoy the close proximity to the rest of the Island, Vancouver & 'Merka'. :thumbsup:
As for crime, there is a bit of a north/south divide in the city & Nanaimo recorded it's 1st homicide of the year yesterday!!

Hi Kyla

Initially lived in Kelowna found it pleasant enough but not enough to make us stay, moved over to the island mainly due to OH getting a job in Naniamo and love it here it seems this past week weve had four differant seasons in as many days couldnt believe it when we came out of the pub Thursday afternoon and found ourselves in the middle of a snow flurry but by the next day it had all disappeared ..We have a teenager hes settled in well loves his school and it seems such a more laid back lifestyle here ,went skiing for the first time on Saturday an hours drive away and all loved it .

thanks for the reply.im really starting to come round to the idea of the island, i fact we may come next week(weather permitting) for a visit.my hubby is quite intrested in parksville, it looks wonderful and we have heard good things about it.

any opinions on that??

Yes can second the good opinions of Parksville we drove through it yesterday on the way to Qualicum there seems to be a lot of building going on there ,so thats got to be good its got everything you could need in close proximity shops , restaurants etc but my personal preferance would still be Naniamo .Feel free to PM me if you fancy a meet up while your here

Keep in mind that Parksville and Qualicum are very much retirement communities.

If that will work for you fine, but do be aware.;)

and - depending on which part of that strip (say ladysmith to qualicum) you look at - property prices have gone up erm... "quite a bit" in that area in the past years. i know about i guy in fairwinds whose house tripled in price since he built it five years ago.

if you have a nice chunk of money - good for you. but as steve said: don't be surprised.

Hi Kyla

Just wondered why the interest in Parksville is it specific to a job offfer or is it just somewhere you want to reccie first .If its the second would recommend a look a Naniamo if you have the time to spare while your over on the island
