Hi all

Sorry havent spoke for a long time been working since landing in october solid

Mad thing is I got told had to let go
I was working on a gas rig, working 12 hour days and filling in with a four hour drive total each day so as you can imagine i was a little tired and had worked 28 days

I was sleeping about 4 hours a night and have lost 20lbs in weight

My friend had got me the job but after 10 days he had moved to another rig soon as he had gone the two main guys the supervisor and manager started giving me hassle then last week the manager said i have to let you go after working an extra two days

but what i found out they got rid of me just so the supervisor could employ his friend sucks eh

so im back to the board looking for jobs
bonus side is made 8000 dollars so thatll keep us going for a while

I was upset and down for the first few days, but after visiting the gym and seeing the family im not going to let this beat me

Well back to the job sites

But, I have paid a years worth of contributions. So it would be a bit of a bugger to think I get no benefit from that.

Anyone with any thoughts or experience of this?

I understand - but that said - I have learnt that here in NB for example - Even if that might be the case - NB officials would double check on it - If Your deal was with the Federal government - you might find you can get assistance at Provincial level?

Its something I am certainly going to research further. Rereading the sponsor form that Mrs AX signed it refers sternly to needing 'social assistance'. Now I believe EI is different and distinct to social assistance. So we will look at it next year when my severance pay runs out.

Cheers,
AX

I seem to recall having seen somewhere that you need to register yourself with the Employment Insurance people within 4 weeks of your last day of work, otherwise you may lose benefits. If I understand correctly, you need to lodge your claim for EI benefits within that 4 week window, even if you've received severance pay from your former employer.

I may be mistaken about that, but I think it might be worth your while at least to check out my hunch.

EI is not social assistance. You and your employer paid for that while you were working, so it is insurance not assistance. Downside is it is bloody difficult to get any money out of them. My husband got laid off in mid-January 2004 and it was the first of March before he started the job he has now. He got a whopping $90 from them for the 6 weeks he was out of work. There is a 2 week waiting period and there is a formula for how much you will get paid based on what you got paid the last year and how much you paid into them in fee. What really screwed him is he took a couple of temp jobs in the interim (4 days for one and 5 days for the other) and they started the 2 week wait over again after each of those. So don't do that! Also, they take forever to actually send you a check.

DO NOT WAIT.

There is a statute of limitations on claiming, and a waiting period before you see any money. Its possible (in fact lightly) that your severance package will exclude you from getting any EI anyway if you are eligiable.

Its not the fairest system, what can I say, but you need to look at your options right away.
