Default Temp medical insurance in Ontario advise needed please

Right guys, this one is for all of you who have taken out temp medical cover for your first 3 months in Canada.

I am heading to Ontario and need temp cover for first 3 months until OHIP kicks in

I phoned Canadasure today and was quoted
Plan A with baggage £ 763.75
Plan B with baggage £ 998.75

Plan A without baggage £ 649.19
Plan B without baggage £ 848.94

Surely they are taking the piss, this amount of dosh for a family of 5
They did say that my premium was loaded by 100%, doubled my quote, due to me going back to my trade as a welder, they said its a high risk employment, but I thinks the overall quote is still very high.

I need advice as to what you guys did
Can I wait until I get there and get it a damn site cheaper, if so from whom.
Can anyone recommend someone or a company that would maybe be cheaper.
I only know Canadasure

Can your bog standard broker in Canada do this type of insurance or does it need to be a specialist insurance provider.
Did any of you with a family not take out cover !!!!

This is some amount of money for 3 months insurance

Any advice would of course be much appreciated

Eddie

We came to ontario last december and used canadasure, my husband is also a welder. We paid 519 pounds for a family of 4. They were very quick to help us when my son became ill with pneumonia in february.

But do they do specific OHIP gap filling insurance?. Thats a world away from regular suplimental to OHIP insurance.

Eddie, did you check out the link to the settlement org site I posted in the immigration area today listing all the providers. It should be in the first couple of pages. I was insured by Canada LIfe, but my employer paid, and Canada Life is someone else now anyway I think, so not a lot of help (other than to suggest to your employer that they do the decent thing and sort it out for you!) It was specifically called a foreign worker plan.

You can arrange it here, but if you wait more than a day or two (seriously) after arriving you will miss the boat and be without coverage. I doubt it would be much cheaper.

I bet Shan was mighty glad to have the insurance when their son got sick :scared:

****, time for bed.

Well, no, it was pretty obviously a request for coverage for the three months before ohip kicks in.

Eddie, yes, best to get it done and dusted before arriving. Too much to do once you get here for starters.

Has your employer told you you are on your own for the first three month? If not you could play the dumb newcomer and see if they will take care of it.

Iain I was told at my interview in May that their benefits, life insurnace, short and long term disability, dismemberment, accidental death for all the family, dental, prescriptions drugs and glasses, etc will not kick in until OHIP kicks in.

So yes I am on my own for the first 3 months.

Are these benefits I quoted standard for employees in Canada !!!!!

What about asking their insurer if they would or could cover the family !!!

Ta much Iain

Hi Eddie,

That looks like a standard enough set of benefits for those who get them, but not all employees in all companies by a long shot are lucky enough to get a benefits package at the lower levels, its a coveted thing to get a job with benefits. The % coverage will vary from plan to plan though. Those higher up the greasy pole who are better able to afford medical expenses, tend to be the ones who get more of them covered by insurance.

There provider probably offers a "foreign worker" fill in type plan, so its worth asking. Remember though that the 3 month fill in is a different beast to the suplemental insurance that will kick in through the employer when your OHIP starts. I guess my employer took good care of me as they covered the first three months too, although in my naivety I think I told them when they were recruiting me I wouldnt fancy being in Canada without coverage, so maybe they took that as a hint.
