Default tax questions (Alberta & work permit)

hiya,

hope someone can help me becuase i'm losing the plot here -

part 1:
we've been told we can claim back the EI payments for the past year becuase as we're on work permits we are not entitled to claim unemployment insurance.

a) is that true?
b) where on the bloody form does it go ?

Part 2:
what is a good idiot proof software to get ? work have offered quicktaxweb but others have recommend quicken... not even sure if we can use them becuase we've never filed in Canada before.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Ian

I don't know if Work Permit holders can claim back their Employment Insurance contributions.

We use Quick Tax, which is published by Intuit.

You probably could get many of your questions answered at Revenue Canada Agency's web page entitled Newcomers to Canada - 2006.

They say that if, after reading their information, you still have questions, you can call them toll free at 1-800-959-8281.

If I were you I would call them with respect to your EI premiums question -- even if someone on this forum seemingly answers that question to your satisfaction. I would recommend you do that even if I had been able to answer your question. The information that you get on this forum sometimes is good, and sometimes it's worth what you paid for it. I don't mind getting a bum steer on where to find Marmite. I do mind it when it concerns something more important, like taxes.

Nope, Im pretty sure you cant. It better not be, as I never did when I was on a work permit

I use www.Ufile.ca online, As a first time filer you would have to print out the return and mail it in, but after that you can efile. To get familiar with the various schedules it might be worth getting a paper tax form booklet from the post office or downloading it, just to see the various options, but the online "interview" at Ufile makes sure the maths is right and saves a lot of hassle, and is cheaper than buying a disk you wont be able to use next year anyway as the tax allowances are always changing.
