Ah cool thanks - didn't know this - thought I read somewhere about an April 30th date but was a while ago and at the time wasn't paying much attention as we hadn't got the visa then!

So will need to file a return in Jan 2013 - if only 1 of us is working do we both file a return or would only the working person file? Sorry to be a tax pain :)

April is the deadline to file for the previous Jan-Dec year.

Both should file for the sake of maximising any benefits in future, but legally the non worker doesnt HAVE to, as they wont owe any tax.

Scotiabank also has a discount deal with TurboTax.

RBC is offering free returns through H&R Block this year..... Look in your RBC online messages for a link.

I think the consensus is that H&R block should be avoided, most especially by newcomers. They are quite likely to get it all wrong and cause a world of headache.

Free is far too expensive.

Strange.... While I found the software to be less navigable than turbotax it was still pretty easy to use..... At least for a straightforward return.....

Software? Am I missing the point here? Are you saying the H&R block have gone online?

If so, I withdraw my remark, but in the past H&R were famous for employing poorly qualified retired book-keepers to fill in the forms and none of them actually understood how to do it for someone who'd just arrived in Canada.

They were all cradles of course.

Yup, the RBC deal is for an online service, provided by H&R block..... Netfile if eligible or print & file for newbies.

I'm sure I saw a section for new immigrants to enter the date of residence.... will have to check.

I believe they also offer a short training (two weeks I believe) course and you're a tax preparer.

I've used turbotax for my first return and printed and mailed out today for the 6 weeks I was working here in 2011.

What is the 'usual' timeframe for refunding any money for the first paper return ? (if it isn't selected for review etc)

Hell, we just used them for out first return. Not really sure what to expect. Nothing very complicated or so we thought. Just hubby and his UK military pension, I'm not working. Quote seemed ok but final cost almost $300  apparently as they split his pension it cost more. Hopefully the refund will be what they have calculated. Will be doing our own next year.
