Surprised no one has chimed in with Fortinos as a suggestion - Waitrose prices and Tesco ambiance.

There's a small chain in the area, L and M Stores. The locals refer to it as "Limp and Mouldy".

It wasn't that expensive in the olden days, better quality but identical stuff was price matched. No idea what it's like now. If I went in one I would probably have a breakdown and have to be dragged away from the deli and cheese counter.

Canada used to have M&S until the late 90s. Does anyone know why they closed?

Edit: Nevermind!

M&S expanded into Canada in 1973, and at one point had forty seven stores across Canada. Despite various efforts to improve its image, the chain was never able to move beyond its reputation there as a stodgy retailer, one that catered primarily to senior citizens and expatriate Britons. The shops in Canada were smaller than British outlets, and did not carry the same selection. In the late 1990s, further efforts were made to modernise them and also expand the customer base. Unprofitable locations were closed. Nonetheless, the Canadian operations continued to lose money, and the last 38 shops in Canada were closed in 1999.

Oh yes, the one on Parliament is a real taste of urban Canada. Choose your fruit and veg carefully so as not to get the items that have been nibbled by the homeless and watch out for meth crazed melon flingers.

Is this something common to K-W/Guelph area, is it? Thanks for the heads up.

Parliament is a street in Toronto. The No Frills is approximately at Gerrard. I don't know if they have No Frills in K-W.

The OP said she's in the K-W area and having a friend who lives there, I know she's shopped at No Frills, that's why I suggested giving it a try. I don't know what street it's on so thought, when you said Parliament, I thought you were saying that was the street name in K-W (because for all I know K-W may have a street by that name, I dunno). And I know Parliament Street is in Toronto

We DO have a Fortino's (at least 3 of them) in Brampton. Definitely the Waitrose end as regards prices (why would you pay $1.49/lb for potatoes here when you can get them at FreshCo for $0.99?) but often a more pleasant experience. The range tends to be wider than some of the bargain places too.

So it all depends on whether I'm bargain-hunting (yes, we read the flyers) or indulging.
