I've not booked it yet, but it will be one-way - this was one of the factors in deciding who to go but to be honest, air transat are still coming out cheaper then anywhere else at the moment.
In January I flew in one of the renovated planes, and honestly, the seat space didn't bother me... I found BA's 787 to be a smidge tighter, actually! Again, for 6-7 hours, hardly the end of the world. :) (Also, check Air Transat Club Class, I think if you book Club you get a second checked bag.) -- Just saw FL's response as well - agreed. Usually I'm happy to pay a premium to fly direct, or otherwise with as few stops as possible... but I have seen some flights where it's just SOOOOOO much cheaper to connect in the US. One trip home a few years ago it was a difference of about $300... so for $300 I took the connection. But if it's only $50 or $100... screw it, I'll fly direct. |
Re: Suggest Airlines
try iceland air....uk----iceland---toronto ..prices were cheaper than transat....or dublin---chicago---toronto/canada.with many carriers.

I also noticed wth BA you get an extra bag in your free baggage allowance on a one-way ticket but the cost of single ticket doesn't make up for this. I'll need to fly from Heathrow so will stick to Air Canada or BA, most likely Air Canada as that's who I usually fly with when I got to Canada. Now need to find the cheapest way to ship a few boxes to Calgary...

Re: Suggest Airlines
We flew with Airtransat as it was the cheapest. I thought it was fine. Really nice and helpful staff, we all boarded quite quickly. The kids had games machines & pads with them so we weren't really bothered by the one tv in the aisle. Also, they were doing first class seats for an extra £99 and you get double baggage allowance. We didn't do that but wish I had as the extra suitcase was half that cost and I would have got a nicer seat & food!

Re: Suggest Airlines
Value is subjective. If you want cheap, a charter is the cheapest. If you want baggage allowance, amenities, comfort, you pay more, but to some it is better value. Personally, I use Air Canada or British Airways Club, to me this is by and far the best value.

Re: Suggest Airlines
Check the seat pitch on each airline's flight, choose the flight with the seat configuration you want.

Air Transat has always been good for me. Sitting in the same seat for 8-9 hours is always going to be uncomfortable after a while so I don't see the point in paying extra for a little bit more comfort. Having said that.. I have found that AC can be cheaper than AT on occasion. BA is usually almost guaranteed to be more expensive every time. Anyone know when WestJet start their Dublin route? |

That was the conclusion I came to as well - and as orly said, even though their seats are a bit smaller than some of the others (at least until Air Canada launches their super-tight new 777s) it's not awful for a 6-7hr flight. Have a drink, take some antihistamine to knock you out, and just sleep through it... or order a few drinks and watch cheesy airplane movies. Either serves the purpose. :P

It's not a big deal when I'm going to there for a least a year (not as if it's a 2 week holiday and I miss a day due to tiredness/lack of sleep). Believe it or not I have never been on one of their refurbished planes yet so at least I have that 'comfort' to look forward to I have flown with BA and AC before and must say BA has been the worst. |

Thats what its all about isn't it to most people the costs
I am amazed at what people will do to save a few bucks and the routing they take to get from one place to another and I have done it myself. Im at that age now where its either a direct flight or least changes and to hell with the cost. The extra expense is worth the hassle of missed connections, changing planes and terminals and all of the customs and security procedures. Each to their own I guess but when Im dealing with tired cranky passengers who have been on the go for 24 hours plus then don't take it out on me I didn't ****ing book your flight did I. Last year, at short notice, I ended up having to go Buffalo > Chicago > Gatwick > Belfast Yes...the geographically minded will know Buffalo to Chicago is the wrong direction. |
Re: Suggest Airlines
We upgraded with Transat as we then got 40kg of luggage each which made a big difference. We have also flown economy with them and yes the seats are a bit smaller and you have to pay for drinks etc but at the end of the day you are only on the plane for a few hours whichever airline you use. If Transat comes out cheaper then why pay more for a few extra inches!

Usually possible to go "reasonably direct" for me. Toronto to Dublin is often available and then a 90 minute drive to where my parents live.
Last year, at short notice, I ended up having to go Buffalo > Chicago > Gatwick > Belfast Yes...the geographically minded will know Buffalo to Chicago is the wrong direction. I've done both AC and BA for Heathrow > Toronto, no complaints with either. (In fact, my more recent BA ones were on the 787 - mixed feelings about that one... though the Christmas Eve flight upgrade to First Class was definitely welcomed!) In 2009 my husband's family did a reunion in the US for his grandmother's 90th birthday... it was in December so I combined that trip with coming home for Christmas. So I needed to fly London > Orlando / Orlando > Toronto / Toronto > London. That flight itinerary was INSANELY expensive. I ended up booking London > Washington > Orlando / Orlando > Washington > Buffalo / Buffalo > Washington > London. Yeah the extra connection in Washington on all three flight legs was a royal pain in the backside, but that flight itinerary was about £300 cheaper. So the extra hour's drive to Buffalo was definitely worth it. (Plus it gave my mom an excuse to go do some shopping!) Sometimes it's cheaper to find alternate routes.... sometimes the direct route is just better. BTW if you are booking on Air Transat and wanting to pick your seat, it's I think £20 per person per leg to reserve your seat in advance. When I did my one-way I was flying on my own so I wasn't that fussed about it, but one trip where my husband and I were flying together, the £80 of extra expense in choosing seats meant the Air Transat flight was the same price as the Air Canada flight, so we booked that instead. |

Re: Suggest Airlines
When I flew over, I came Transat. Upgraded to Club Class.
Brought 2 suitcases, each 20kg/44lbs. And an extra large snowboard bag, weighing another 20kg. 60kg. Not to be sniffed at, especially considering how cheap the flight and upgrade was. Yes, it was cramped and uncomfortable. But then, I'm moving my life across the world. I can put up with a bit of discomfort. Sure beats how they used to immigrate to north america before the plane age... http://griid.files.wordpress.com/201...ic-sinking.jpg |
