Default Study permit renewal

Hi Guys

I've been studying in Halifax for the last year, with my permit expiring 31st of August. I applied for my permit to be extended for a year within the recommended time-frame but I have still had no response. I've been told that my application hasn't been looked at yet but obviously my status has expired. Am I allowed to stay in the country as a visitor until the renewal comes through or do I have to leave? On a slightly related note, why do online applications take almost twice as long as paper applications? and why did nobody at the uni tell me this

You're fine as long as you applied before the expiration date. You're on implied status.

Cool, thanks! Does anybody know if it's possible to apply for an off-campus work permit whilst waiting for the new study permit? I should've done it at the same time but money was a little tight and I couldn't spare the application fee at the time.
