Hi Howardk, here is a link to Ski Central. I think that Martock would be the closest to Halifax.
We only landed this year so will wait til next year before we check out Wentworth which is closest to New Glasgow. I do know that our local park has cross-country skiiing during winter months so its worth checking out community facilities too.

Nova Scotia has ski 'hills' rather than mountains, so don't get too excited, but there is skiing to be done
Martock is around 45 minutes from the western side of HRM. It's not huge, but it is enough of a challenge for me (first season just completed). We are just about to buy season tickets for next year which are about $109 each at the moment - bargain!!
Wentworth is a bit bigger and better and is probably about 1 hour 15 mins out, and it is further north in the province.
We have also been to Poley Mountain in Sussex, NB (about 3.5 hours away), which we really enjoyed as it has much more reliable snow and a bigger range of runs.
Maine is only about 9 or 10 hours drive to some real mountains - we went to Sunday River, fantastic

We are planning to move to NS (when visa is through) but already have a house there (check out www.holidaynovascotia.com) and go out every 4-6 months.
You can ski in NS - dedicated downhill ski and snowboard centre is Ski Wentworth, and there's lots of cross country skiing. Very outdoorsy lifestyle in NS.
