Simple TV question
moving to Vancouver next week.
Who is best Shaw, telus, Rogers I will want to use some sort of VPN to get uk TV and use my hacked Amazon Fire TV Ta |
Re: Simple TV question
We use bell, I hear they are all pretty similar! We use a VPN too, would not be able to survive without it :)
|
Re: Simple TV question
what vpn setup do you use
|
Re: Simple TV question
We use Telus who have been ok so far. Some nice deals at the moment too with free 50" TV if you sign up for 2 years (may be good if you had to buy one over her anyway). They also allow you to swop your TV channel packages online so if there is a program you want to watch for a few months you can drop a different package and pick up the one you want for the time you want.
I would also be very interested to know what VPN services people are using, I cannot abide North American news. |
Re: Simple TV question
We ditched TV and only stream. Have done for a couple of years now and don't miss it. From consumer reports (CBC Marketplace), Bell had the worst customer service. When we had TV Telus was OK.
Rogers is not available in BC |
Re: Simple TV question
We use "what uk tv abroad" we don't usually have any problems :)
|
Re: Simple TV question
We are with Shaw, it's ok - all pretty much the same but will very much depend on what is available in your house (not area or city, it seems to work by individual houses!)
We use hidemyass for the vpn. Sometimes have a slight issue with bbc but need to make sure the device has all of the search history and location tracking deactivated and it tends to work (we found the same with a few others too). It's also really useful for logging onto some uk websites (credit reports etc) |
Re: Simple TV question
We use Shaw. They provide decent service and have always been fairly proactive in fixing any issues. Even gave us a new a new PVR to replace the old one eveb though it was out of warranty and we owned it.
We thought about moving to Telus but between them being a pain to even sign up with along with them wanting a deposit which means not qualifying for any of the freebies, we chose to stay with Shaw. I think Bell is only sattelite in BC? Or so they offer cable now? Rogers isnt out this far west. We have recently gone to the skinny 25/month cable package and do more netflix but cable is still easiest for new run shows on network TV. |
Re: Simple TV question
Don't bother with a TV package, they are all very expensive with poor content. I was paying (3yrs ago) $170 per month with Shaw for TV, Internet and home phone. This was with none of the added extras (HBO, movies, sports) I got rid of the home phone and TV after about 3 months.
I bought an aerial to watch local news etc... I use Netflix, shomi and a VPN to watch UK TV. For my VPN I use private internet access, they have an an app for the iPad. It costs around $50 (US) per year. I've never had a problem with it. |
Re: Simple TV question
If only over the air worked Canada wide. So many areas where its not possible to pick up anything OTA.
My friend on the Island tried. CBC was the only station he could pick up.

Rogers is not available in BC depending on peples experience- We just switched because of the speed availability of the internet 20Mbs- Telus- versus 100+ with Shaw. If you are in Vancouver then speed isn't likely to be a problem |

It would be my choice of 'one only' from those. It really does seem the case that the greater the choice, the greater the difficulty in finding something worth watching. I mean, good TV is obviously out there but finding it seems to be more likely with fewer distractions. |
Re: Simple TV question
Works for him.
All I really need network wise is ABC/CBS\CW\NBC as everything I watch is on those. Only CBC show I like is Schitts Creek. But of course they dont let you just have those 4 or 5 networks. But its cheaper to get the package then to pay 3 to 5 dollars per channel.

Well that's not bad. News, current affairs, comedy, bit of drama, light TV viewing. Pretty much what's available on CBS, NBC, ABC, CTV or Global.

Re: Simple TV question
Ask simple question and you get the inevitable thread drifts... Of away into the distance ...
|
Re: Simple TV question
I prefer Telus, tried Shaw but that includes internet too as i always bundle, Shaw speeds i found vary like crazy as its a shared connection where as Telus speed seems constant.
Telus also streams 3D movies on their video on demand, just need a 3D TV to watch them. I use a Raspberry Pi mostly now so when i called to shut down my cable they offered to let me keep it at $5 per month for their basics but i still have access to video on demand so i kept it so still bundled. |
Re: Simple TV question
All you need is Internet, Unotelly and Kodi.
Ooh and a normal ariel if you really must watch Canadian tv. You get 4 or 5 HD quality channels with it. |

I agree. What is best add-on that you use? Just trying Exodus which seems good enough as a replacement for Genesis- just realised the biblical links:cool:

Re: Simple TV question
For some reason Genesis began playing up real bad recently so i booted it and replaced it with Exodus which is virtually identical anyway, Genesis seemed to slowly stop working, very odd ? I have a TV app that lets me watch most UK TV and some american/Canadian, i'll have to look and see what its called tonight, its something like Flv TV or close to that. It wont decode sky TV though lol
|
Re: Simple TV question
We have Novus. Pretty fast internet and decent tv for about $130 per month.
|
Re: Simple TV question
The app I use for TV is called Ftv Guide. For those that have Kodi etc just do a quick search. Be warned there are some adult channels too
|

Re: Simple TV question
There are some "Bikini" Chanels, too many to go through lol
Force Awakens is now 1080p on Exodus ! Movie Time ! |
Re: Simple TV question
If its so simple why do we have multiple different answers
If I get X & X is it legal? What if I do it this way is that legal? Who cares if its legal or not? So simple TV isn't all that simple given the plethora of choices legal or not. |

You are quite right, the waters I think are very muddy. As long as Snoop gets off my case with regard to warning emails then I'm a happy pup Genesis did go a bit Pete Tong for a while but It seems to be back to its best for me. Only Channel 4 doesn't seem to want to play but I watch that via the website. Any probs I have I look at the Kodi's forum, answers and solutions come very quickly. Are you getting warning emails? From who? I wouldn't use Shaw or any of the cable suppliers even if they dropped their prices drastically. I like the way I watch telly now. |

We switched to Shaw due to internet speed as we all stream independently. We just have Shaw for our internet, no cable etc, as you say, no need. We have to have a landline as we live in a bit of a dip and our cellphone coverage is sketchy in certain parts of the house- annoying but in view of work we do have to be contactable most of the time. Hopefully upgrades to Telus in town this year may improve things and we can then ditch the pointless landline |
Re: Simple TV question
My MIL rents out rooms in her house to 20 somethings passing through Squam and they of course download various movies and such and recently shaw has been sending warninf letters of some sort about it, has her paranoid now the cops are gonna bust down her door.

Re: Simple TV question
I was told by my IT friend its not the download they track you with its when it "seeds" thats when they can track you. I had two emails from Telus regarding illegal downloads so one cure for that was an app on my phone so i could monitor those downloads while relaxing in my recliner. Once the download was at 95% i would drag my ass to the PC and shut off the download before it started seeding. Well he put the app on my phone and PC thats what IT friends are for lol

Re: Simple TV question
If you have an Android phone/Android Box (like Nexus Player, NVidia Shield, MXIII G etc...) or Apple TV or a Windows based computer, just install Kodi and install the free FilmOn addon. You get most UK channels (BBC, ITV etc.. Food Network)
Been running it for over a year now. |
Re: Simple TV question
I use Play Box Hd on my iPad and iPhone to stream to my apple tv, as most current movies and tv shows, its free and as its not torrent its not an issue until they decide to make streaming an issue

Yep, that is what we do, just stream. I thought that was what I had suggested but maybe my post was a bit confusing:cool: |
