We used to use our UK VISA card when we came across, it is accepted at the cash machines, car hire companies etc....However as with every transaction there will be a charge.

My better half loves TC's....I found them a pain on holidays because sometimes you'd be asked for proof of ID...Maybe I look like a gangster...But I like the simple life of just pay and be done with it.

Australian friends of ours have had this experience in both Canada and the USA, and a Canadian friend has experienced it in the USA.

Also, at least as far as Calgary and the Canadian Rockies are concerned, it tends to be the higher end businesses that accept the American Express credit card. Mom and Pop type operations tend to accept only Visa and MasterCard. I understand the reason is that American Express charges the merchant a larger commission fee, and small businesses cannot afford it.
When my Mum came in June she had exactly this trouble with some bank machines especially TD Canada Trust who are a pile of poo anyway. But she had a little trouble getting cash but there are so many machines everywhere she just moved onto another one and took it out there. I think plastic is good.

Hi all

Many thanks for all the replies - we have Nationwide Cards so I guess we'll be using those !!

The fees can add up so it's definitely worth using a Nationwide Debit card abroad or a credit card but that is a cash advance and has it's own charge but no foreign currency loading.

I have both NW & Morgan Stanley and MS showed the fees as a separate billed amount so I knew what I had been stung for!

Use the Flexaccount Debit/Visa card, not the pure Visa card if possible. The pure Visa cards has a small (very small) difference.

We went over last summer with our NW credit card and travellers cheques purchased from M&S who dont charge commission and if you have an &more card you can put the cost of the travellers cheques on there. Also they seem to have a better exchange rate than the travel agents. They were accepted everywhere with no problems.
