So we have the ridiculous situation that I will be running a group of engineers, one of which with 15 years years less experience will have to be formally checking all my work.
Do the long Winters make them all barking mad in Alberta or whatt??????

Welcome to Canada.
I'm counting down the days until I can move back to the UK.

We pointed out that the dean of the faculty was South African, and enquired if he had done the english test too .... at which point the application was accepted!

In the meantime, I wonder if the British dental body has taken steps to ensure no Canadian trained dentists get to practise in the United Kingdom until this is sorted out.

A dental surgeon! Why are you even considering this Canadian nonsense? Consider the US.

Hi
Yup,
"3-Commonwealth graduates; those who graduated from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malta (until 1978), University of Malaya (from 1997) and certain universities in South Africa; can obtain a full registration to practice on their own, unsupervised or in the NHS. BUT, they will need a work visa/work permit to do so.
4-Overseas (other than above) dentists; can obtain a temporary registration for the purpose of Postgraduate Training/Research and Teaching only (they need to be supervised at all times by the above categories (British, Europeans, Registered commonwealth graduates), can not work in a private practice and will need a work permit after five years if they have been granted the "permit free" period visa to start with and, the IQE for the full registration with the GDC."
Tit for Tat, UK doesn't recognize Canadian Dentist, Canada doesn't recognize UK dentists.

It's tragic that Canada won't recognise his dental qualifications or experience, but sadly it doesn't surprise me one iota.
I have a first class honours degree in Computer Science and a list of UK IT accreditations as long as your arm. Not only are they worthless over here, but I can't even get shop work as I'm not considered experienced enough.
So evidently, running an entire IT department doesn't qualify me to use a Canadian till! Unbelievable.
The rate of underemployment in Canada must be truly staggering. I was speaking to an Iranian guy just the other day who was mopping floors in Pizza Pizza. He had a PhD and 3 degrees from his native Iran and spoke better English than many Canadians! This bizzare policy is an utter disgrace and must cost the Canadian economy trillions of dollars in wasted talent alone.
My advice, go to Australia instead.

Advice for IT people: It always pays to make sure that your certifications are valid in Canada before you arrive ... there are plenty of North American qualifications that are recognised globally: the full CompTIA range are popular with employers, PMI, Microsoft, Novell, Cisco, Citrix, Red Hat, etc, etc, etc ... the list goes on ... take a look at Workopolis or Monster and check what employers are looking for.
